I have no formal art training, I only have a handful of sketches for ideas of individual comic, I'm just fleshing out characters, history, etc, but I get the feeling that within a few weeks, I'm going to want to open up a webcomic somewhere and just start posting things.

Therein lies the problem. I don't want to put some halfassed product out there and build on it. I'd like to start out of the gate strong and build on a solid foundation. The creation part is easy; I fortunately am a writer by trade and have no issues coming up with characters, plot, etc.  It's the concept of putting the ideas onto paper which is hard (oh, really?).

I'm not sure what to do.

I don't want to lose interest as I try to learn the basics of drawing. I want to strike while the iron is proverbially hot, but I feel that I don't have the hammer or tongs to do so. I'm excited and want to get started, but I don't want to lose interest, get discouraged, wait too long, have life get in the way, etc.

One of my first suggestions to you was to have a sketchbook. Draw, write and scribble your ideas and go back to them for motivation. If you feel ready to do it, then do it, but just keep in mind that if you're uncomfortable heading straight into it, you should probably practice until you get it straight. You may feel that right now, if you don't do it, you won't later but you won't be able to do it anyways if you're not comfortable heading straight into it.

Just keep in mind that a comic is NOT just writing and drawing but organization as well. Where the speech fits, how effective the panels are and the camera views/shots, and if it flows well enough with the previous page and the next page. A lot of work is put into it so you really need to be comfortable before jumping in.
