Set yourself on fire.

« on: February 04, 2007, 10:14:10 PM »

Some of you know and have spoken to me about this project. I haven't made a final decision quite yet and AI_Joe has offered to take it over if I do so choose to leave. I don't want to close this project and I don't want to leave. Some of you have had some suggestions for me to keep threads open, to allow commenting, to turn this into a contest (something I am highly against.)

I do see problems with the suggestions as I don't think sketchadoodle is in need of a change. I do not believe that this project is the problem. At all. The problem here is the fact that there are very little contributors - this is something that I don't get. No, I don't believe that this is the case of poor advertising either. I don't really believe in advertising something that is meant for a community full of creative minds. It doesn't matter, in this project, whether or not you have artistic talent. You just need to have fun.

So what is there to do? Because I don't believe in a problem with sketchadoodle, just disinterested people. There really isn't much for me to do. I decided to run this for the next little while, and see how things pan out. I'm opening up commenting for the next few weeks in the sketchadoodle threads.

I've also decided to allow you to nominate topics. The way it works is you PM me with a topic and I'll choosing the best ones.

I hope more of you will start contributing but if this fails, then I will be shutting this down or handing it down to AI_Joe.

Feel free to post your feelings, comments and whatever pertaining to the issue in this thread. Thanks.

P.S. I have also removed the posts that were not submissions in the Fudge thread.

I think the concept of Sketchadoodle isn't the problem either. I know there are many artists on the Applegeeks forums that could benefit from this. Think of this as a Brain Age exercise for your creative juices. It doesn't matter if you can draw well, the point is to try and come up with something that hopefully challenges you. I know that I sit around a lot and wonder what to draw. This give me a fresh subject to ponder every week. This helps me by drawing things that I normally wouldn't draw. There are a lot of you out there that can draw one or two things really well. Well this is your chance to expand your repertoire.
Another thing is that you have a whole week to draw something. If you really don't have the time, just scribble something on a post-it note. Take five minutes and post something. I have a lot of time on my hands, therefore I am usually able to make a more finished piece. I'd hate for Rose to stop this - I enjoy having someone else choose the topic for me to draw. I enjoy trying to come up with something demented (much to Rose's chagrin).
The contest idea is not what this is about. Although I do hope that Hawk tries to have more contests on the forum like last year, Sketchadoodle is for the practice.

I propose that the rules slightly change to have comments from _participants_ of the week's topic. Meaning that you have to post art in order comment on other's art. Once you post your art, you can comment once on other artists posts (one comment per piece).

I also propose that we offer signature badges that link to Sketchadoodle for participants to use. Hopefully I can offer several in different sizes that do not reside on my personal site's server. (Maybe Hawk can host some?) We need some advertising and constantly reminding forum goers (and anybody else) that Sketchadoodle exists and is looking for people to come play.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. It is late, and maybe I'm not making any sense - I just want this to stick around. Although I'd like for other people to play along. I don't like being to only one at the party dancing.

I may not have been the biggest contributor to this thread, but I still think it's a good idea to have sketchadoodle. I won't get into an explanation why, because it just damn is. I really hope to see more people join up and participate.

i as well have not been a highly contributory person on behalf of this thread, but would not like to see it go.. i just got my computer up and running again willing to get into it again so.. shutting it down would be really bad.. for me at least. as AI_Joe stated it is a really good art exercise, and it would hurt to try once in awhile. i hope to see more people joining this thread. Some people have put up some REALLY good designs on here, and then just vanished.. and it would be nice to see more of their work.

im behind you all 100% and am willing to help out wherever need be.

so maybe we can try and make this work  out well!

I'm lazy. I admit it.

Sometimes I may draw something on paper, and don't wanna kneel down and scan it.  (My scanner is on top of my computer, and my computer is below my desk... within kicking range of my feet... I've injured my toe before in my CPU fan...)

sooo... yeah.. =\

plus this is the third time I'll have to find my drivers again on Canon's website... (reformats..)

I've thought a bit.

I've been really tired lately, I have very little time to dedicate to such a project. I went to school full time and now that that's over, I work full time. Pretty soon, I'll be doing both at once on top of my art gigs.

I've tried to hand this over to someone else, and the offer was refused.

All in all, I'm sick of hearing excuses. If more people had shown interest, I probably would have been more dedicated myself. But despite the fact that people like this idea, it seems that their actions say otherwise. I haven't updated in a while and not once, did I recieve any message of concern for this project. Although I dedicated my time to it, it's not worth keeping if no one gives a fuck, including those who created this project.

I'll keep this post up for a week and request that this child forum be shut down.

That's too bad. I came into these forums too late. I like this idea and I'd participate in it regularly if it were active.
