The Postal Service.
They're all techno-y, lyrical, slow//fast, depressing//uplifting and otherwise amazing.
I found 3 of their cds today, each only 4 bucks ---...each only had 4 songs, but, regardless. It made me happy. =D

ok..I know I recommended them on my first post. But I must re-iterate my recommendation
Riverside. A progressive metalesque band from Poland. These guys are incredible. A lot of songs are mellow but then when they want to rock out they're equally as awesome.
Songs that I recommend by them:
Out of Myself
Loose Heart
In Two Minds
Volte-face
Second Life Syndrome
Artificial Smile
I turned you down

Genre - Artist - Album
Hip-Hop Beats - DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Hip-Hop Beats - DJ Cut Chemist - Litmus Test
Hip-Hop Beats - Abdominal - Flowtation Device
Dance (More over responsible for the Matrix theme tune) - Rob Dougan - Furious Angels
Dance (trip hoppy) - Bonobo - It Came From The Sea
Metal - Corrosion Of Conformity - Deliverance
Rock - Nirvana - Nevermind
Rock - Jimmy Hendrix - Experience Hendrix
Blues - Muddy Waters - The Essential Collection
60/70's Rock - Steppenwolf - The Collection
Yes some of these are well known and "main stream", but these are some truly great albums

DJ Shadow is highly underrated. Don't get the crap from other albums though, stick with HIS stuff. Latest album is pretty badass. A good band that's starting out, and has demo stuff on iTunes is ANDY. Calmer Waters by them is good.

Endtroducing was a fantastic record, but i've not liked a lot of his stuff since. especially the last record. i hate all that gangsta rap stuff, which unfortunatly tends to go hand-in-hand with a lot of hip-hop.
i'd recommend checking out UNKLE though, they've just released a third album but it's the first two you want to look out for: Psyence Fiction is hip/trip-hop and Never, Never, Land is more electronica/trance type stuff. War Stories, their third album, is more rock based. it's a little monotonous for my taste, maybe i just haven't listened to it properly.
UNKLE is James Lavelle and friends (ie the line up keeps changing), who have included DJ Shadow (Psyence Fiction), File of the Scratch Perverts (Never, Never, Land), and all their albums include a lot of high profile guests.
anyone want some ska punk recommendations?

Holy crap, if you haven't heard of the band Four Year Strong yet, you seriously need to check them out if you've into the "Loud Rock" genre. This stuff is great: positive (almost) hardcore music that's catchy as hell. They call themselves "Happy Hardcore", and somehow the title fits. Imagine Jimmy Eat World playing Killswitch Engage songs... that's the only way I can find to describe it.

TeamSleep. Chino Moreno's (from the Deftones) side project. Its like ambient mixed with rock mixed with some electronica influence and indie influence. Chill music for the most part. First album came out a while ago and the second one is being worked on

boards of canada are really great, although i did find their album filed under Dance in my local HMV which amused me greatly. i can't stand Broken Social Scene though, so i'll probably check out those bands via sources of dubious legality before i buy anything.
+1 for Team Sleep recommendation too
Jimmy Eat World playing Killswitch made me giggle, so that's something else i might need. oh my poor wallet.
i just discovered a band called The Return. it's kind of indie ska reggea punk. really sweet. they have two albums, one more ska punk and one slightly more indie sounding, but still very ska. unfortunatly, with a name like that it's really fookin' hard to find a website. you can try searching for album names: danger danger silent stranger, and the arsonist.

I've been into Alice in chains for a long time, and I've been really missing hearing new stuff from them .. I tried listening to their live work with random artists replacing Layne but ... ehh
So I googled them and I *just* found out about Jerry Cantrell's solo album and Layne's Mad Season band ....
aw man ... they're so amazing. I've had both albums playing all day.

YES (Forget about what they did in the 80's...just forget about it)
CD's: Close To The Edge, Relayer, Going For the One
KING CRIMSON (one of Tool's influences)
CD's: Lark's Tongue In Aspic, Starless And Bible Black, Red
EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER
CD's:Trilogy, Pictures At An Exhibition, Brain Salad Surgery
I like progressive rock from the early 70's, it really gets me going...if you want to escape reality for awhile, I'd suggest these groups...
