To christen this new section I figured it would be great to have a thread dedicated to music recommendations where people can list a new band or two, a new album or song that they think is extremely good and people should listen to.

But don't just list it and leave it, you gotta explain why, what makes it so good and exactly why we should take the time to go out and get it. "Because it's fucking sweet!" is not going to fly. Tongue

-----

To start it off I'm going to recommend two things:

First band is the Brooklyn Funk Essentials. They do a sort of jazz meets hip-hop meets reggae sort of thing, great lyrics and really good music. It's very groovy and flowing, perfect for strutting down the street with. Two songs that you should check out to get a feel for the band are "Istanbul Twilight" which has a very reggae feel to it and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" which is more jazz and funk.

The second is a series of mash-ups by DJ BC called The Beastles. Normally I hate combinations of hip-hop music and classic rock, because they normally completely massacre the original song. They kinda do here but somehow it all works. You can recognise the original Beatles tracks and the Beastie Boys lyrics over it all just seem to flow really well.

I am going to recommend MC Lars. He makes Post-punk laptop Rap.

Or something like that.

I love this guy, saw him live a week or so ago too, it was fantastic, he's a really nice guy.

Here's a taster, the video for Ahab.

It's kinda tough to figure out who will like him. Have a look anyway, I wouldn't have expected to like him myself but dammit, I love this stuff. I don't know another artist quite like him.

I'm big into Industrial, but my repitoire is somewhat generic in that respect. With that said, look at these staples of the Industrial music scene:

VNV Nation
Assemblage 23
Decoded Feedback
Wolfsheim

Specific Tracks that kick booty:
VNV Nation - Electronaut (Instrumental...well, no vocals)
VNV Nation - Carbon
Decoded Feedback - Euthanasia
Assemblage 23 - I am the Rain
Assemblage 23 - Let the Wind Erase Me
Assemblage 23 - Complacent

I mention those only to give you a starting point. The Industrial scene is huge, so make good use of Pandora and find some shit that you like on your own. I've had good luck so far. Recent purchases:

Funker Vogt - Killing Fields
Imperative Reaction - Never Tomorrow

I can't stop listening to Muse and Snow Patrol right now. Damn near everything they do I can dig and it's very hard to find an artist like that.

Current Favorites

Butterflies and Hurricanes - Muse

Make this go on Forever - Snow Patrol

Muse is great.

I recommend Riverside for the progressive music lover (metalish)

Opeth for the death metal lovers..but death metal lovers probably already listen to Opeth so..ok well I reccomend it for everyone.

The Roots for you who like hip-hop..oh and definately Danger Doom- The Mouse and the Mask

Since Doug brought up mash ups..I'd have to recommend DJ Danger Mouse- The Grey Album..the album that made these mash ups popular.

Industrial..In Strict Confidence have some really good songs..particularly Zauberschloss. Zeromancer is also pretty good (thanks Orcish) and Puscifer I guess is industrialesque..in a way..but they only have a couple of songs out so far. (Edit: Btw..I am not really familiar with the industrial scene, these are just a few that I've heard and that I like a lot)

Orishas is a good spanish hip hop group.

Agalloch (only their latest album) for post-rock or whatever.

I dunno..I guess that's it for now

Mecchamputechure - The Mars Volta
One of my favorite songs on the Amputechure album. If you're really into hard tones, you'll like this song.

Goodnight Moon - Shivaree
Featured on the Kill Bill 2 soundtrack, one of my favorite songs of all time. I love love singing this!

Your Ex-Lover is Dead - STARS
Canadian bands ftw. If you're into Indie, you'll enjoy this. WHEN THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO BURN YOU HAVE TO SET YOURSELF ON FIRE. This song also has really pretty music to it. The cello is win.

Any NWA if you're into rap in general. Not like this new crap that calls itself rap.

Uh...Led Zeppellin, defintely.

Daft Punk, also. The only good things to musically come out of France, IMO.

If you need to just relax, chill out, or just have a plesant drive to wherever you're going, i suggest Jack Johnson.  I've never gotten road rage listening to him in the car, and i actually ride like a civil person on my bike.

Bah...hahahaha...Knightslugger civil...

Annnnyway, it's not new by any means but it really relaxes me anytime, Knightslugger mentioned in the car and I have been listening to it everytime i'm in my car. It's A Perfect Circle, their Mer de Noms record. Quite nice, or atleast I think so. They use a very good mix of vocals and instruments to make a soothing yet sort of inspiring mix. And well...Maynard kicks ass with his lyrics. Thats all for now kids, and possible check out Lucky Boys Confusion lemme know whatcha think.

Metallica always calm me on the road. Considering the state of traffic in Tucson, I would personally rather have 2 .50 cal link-fed machine guns mounted on my pitiful little Volvo.

Metallica from the Black Album down, after that they suck except for a few exceptions

In my car I've been listening a lot to Opeth's album My Arms, Your Hearse. Their first concept album, it's really really good

Also, Rob Dougan..classified as symphonic techno. He did a few songs for the Matrix movies like Club me to Death and Furious Angels. Really good stuff.
