I have a fairly weird and ongoing problem here, where I simply cannot connect to the internet.

It's running dial up right now. Don't ask. I enter the things I need to, such as the number it needs to dial, the account name and pass code, and telling it to connect via PPP. Still, despite all common logic stating that it should connect, it claims that it cannot find a dial tone.

So unhook the cable from the modem and shove it arse first into the nearest phone. It works flawlessly of course.
My obvious theory then, was that the modem was now deceased. This theory would disprove itself when I would establish a connection via my Windows machine, and then attempt a connection with OS X. It knows there is another connection already involved, as it plays back the modem static. Also, if I try to connect during the middle of a conversation, voice will arise from the speakers.

I'm curious if anyone has any theories. It is a weird, weird problem, and any advice at all is appreciated. Trust me. My work space is too freakin' cluttered now running a PC for the internet, and a Mac for the work.

PS. Yes, yes I am resorting to every last potential forum on the internet for help... *sigh*

some obvious things to check:

Try disabling PPP.
Verify the dial-up number, or try using a different one.
dunno what you're using to get to dialup, but don't use the Network prefence pane, use the Internet Connect program.

Try putting filters on the telephone lines in the house. Other then that, I remember the days of dial-up and the issues it presented. If you try everything suggested and still cannot change the reaction, your ISP could provide you with further advice.
