It's confirmed: Apple has sent out invitations to media for a special event/product rollout on September 12.  Speculations on new products/services include an iTunes movie download service and a 23" HD iMac.  News here:

So, let the shameless speculation begin!

i would be surprised if there is a 23" imac - that's just so big. and it'll be so expensive

the invites to the event say "It's Showtime!" so that sounds highly like it'll be the addition of movies to iTunes

i'm hoping the iPhone comes out soon (even though i've only just bought myself a SE M600i)

It probably is going to be movies, IMO. Maybe a new iPod to go along with it. They already have lots of TV shows, not much of a stretch to go to movies.

Videos would be pretty cool. I think it's very possible for there to be a iPhone. I personally think that the ROKR wasn't that great.

I think Apple will eventually release an iPhone, but not on the 12th.

Invincibility is absolute. Security is relative.

Apple will be eventually forced to release an iPhone. I'm not hanging out for one, but it will definitely happen. As phone companies add more and more digital media capabilities to their mobile devices, there is the potential for the phone (which is probably a more frequently used device then an iPod) to displace the ipod in the digital media field.

Apple doesn't want that. They will have to.

I think this media event is going to be film related (the invite sorta gives it away) so iTMS movie downloads would make sense. Of course Apple are going to say more than that, maybe an HD Core 2 Duo iMac, maybe the (rumoured) new metal nanos, maybe an update to the 5G iPod, though it is long enough since the 5G for a 6th Generation iPod I suppose.

I am going to be different and say that Apple are releasing something that is going to be the iPod of the living room.

As for an iPhone, I think it possible, but they won't release it until they* are completely satisfied. And if they want to have it availible immediately after the announcement it has to go through the FCC (in the US at any rate) 3 months before.
