Depends on what you want to do, games aside. If its graphics, audio, worry free websurfing, etc, go mac. If its purely gaming, go Windows. Programming, and such, Linux.

I'm gonna get a Mac laptop (when my full-time paychecks start rolling in) and then I'm gonna surf EVERY porn site I can think of to see just how "worry free" the web surfing is Tongue
If it can protect against malicioius porn, I will fall into cardinal love with my (yet to have) new Mac laptop.

Why are you buying a new computer?
What do you do with the one you own presently 80% of the time?

True -- if you're on a fairly recent PC of your own, then just upgrade the monkey like no tomorrow

The big thing is ... it's the individual's decision.  Should you get a PC or a Mac is your call, it's your money.

Hellmark pretty much summed it up for you.
Mac -> Graphics and Audio (and now double verified with Knightslugger, worry free internet)
Windows -> Games out the poop shoot.  Also, Windows is the standard for most boring business things (pie charts! spreadsheets!) ... but that rarely appeals to anyone but employers.
Linux -> Programming environment and the OS is free. (although, if I recall correctly, Mac is built ontop of Linux)

You sound like you're a gamer with the "I'll be able to afford games for the PC... " If you want to go hard core gamer mode, Windows may be your best bet.  Then again, people will also tell you that if you get a Mac with the intel chip inside you can just use bootcamp (which will allow you to run the Windows Operating System on it).

Personally, if the computer you are on right now is yours (not a family one or any of that jazz) upgrade into your ultimate gaming machine, then (my recommendation).

Also, as a side note: porn helps everyone and should be available to all ages Smiley

BUT if what Knightslugger said is true (still a bit skeptical -- I have to see things to believe them) then that means it is a truly worry free internet surfing tool ... where all the fun viruses and spyware that come from the internet are not something to be concerned about.  Which will save you a lot of headache down the road (even if you don't look at nudey pictures, there are tons of websites out there that can attack your computer.  The most common and mentioned are the explicit sites)

No OS is completely immune to the occassional bug or crash, Mac has the best record for fighting against them.  A bit of sage advice from the Mac tech at my job, "The difference between the bugs in Windows and a Mac; is that a Windows bug is normally something small and annoying, if a Mac hits a speed bump on ya', it's normally a much bigger problem than you want it to be."

Yeah ... it boils down to:
What you want to do with the computer? games? illustrations?
Do you plan on upgrading it (your present one or new one)?
How long do you plan on keeping it?
Are you willing to purchase the extra software for Virus and Spyware protection? (there are a good number of free ones ... somehow, I always feel safer when I know someone is getting paid to protect my butt)

that's all I really got that streamlines the issue of helping ya' Wink  Give us more information and we can help you more too ... if you go, though, Windows, I'm playing with a ton of programs (opensource ... third party) that let you customize your desktop completely so it feels exactly as you want it to ... dunno what the method of doing that with a Mac is Tongue

Going windows also has a couple more hurdles in the process of buying one ... mainly to the point of "where" and "from whom"?

If you want a Mac, go to the Apple website or an Apple store ...

Windows you can get a machine that'll run them at your local Walmart, Hewlett Packard, Dell, Alienware (praised as THE gamers PC to get ... very expensive, though), Best Buy ... and many many more locations with different deals and values for you to consider.

The mac is tempting >.>

Macs are very well packaged machines.

why?

There's a good point in that too ...
why are you tempted one way or the other?
Do you want to get one because you were inspired by applegeeks?
Do you want to get one because of the fewer viruses out to bite you in the butt?
Do you want to get one because you are a designer at heart and have heeded the graphics community in their call to apple? (this is my main purpose for my Mac purchase.)

If all you're going to do is game, get a PC.

... so much cheaper.  Even if you get a Mac Mini w/intel, you can get so much more for so much less with a PC, that is, if you BUILD the PC. .... Building PCs ftc.

If you plan on buying a PC from a brand name, perse Dell, then get a Mac. Tongue ... You'll have so much less trouble.

I mean, no matter how tempting the Mac is, the fact remains, do you have the money for it? ... I was going to get Powerbook G4 a few years ago for school, but I never managed to save up the money for it.  Now the MacBook Pro is out, and I still say I'm going to get one.  ... and dammit, I will. =|

But yeah, either way... it's cheaper to build a gaming PC, than saving for a Mac that ... yes, will be able to play your games very nicely, but you can get so much more with a gaming PC for that same amount of money.

But it all comes down to:  How much more of Windows can you deal with?  No matter how much Windows users deny it, they deal with a substantial OS comparing to OS X.  If you wanna get a Mac for the thrill of using a Mac, and the less headaches that you will deal with in the future.... then by all means do so. Tongue  (Remember, you still have to provide the money for that. Wink )  But, I will say that the two+ years I've had this PC, I haven't had much trouble with it, and that's only because I'm not the average dumbass user, but... I dream of owning my own Mac again.

Dough: OS X is built on top a version of freebsd, not linux.  Apple wouldn't use that pile of sh*t as a base.  :X oops.

Don't get me wrong... nothing against linux, I use it when not using my mac for the most part (save for gaming).  I find that the mac is very good for programming (the platform I usually work on).  I actually have two computers, a powerbook G4 (most of the my work and important stuff), and a fairly beastly desktop PC, which I dual boot linux/windows on (linux for servering/random messing around, windows for hardcore gaming when needed).  ANYWAY, nothing against linux, just don't think it's the best designed thing ever (referring to the kernel only, as that is what linux is).  In fact there are a few things I wish would become "mainstream" open source, namely GNU Hurd.  Oh well.

Anyway, the choice between os x/windows/*nix is one that should be based off of personal preference, and intended use.

Just don't buy a Dell Inspiron.  Everyone around my campus has one of those 2 inch thick ugly plastic boxes >_<.

OSX is based on FreeBSD, which is official UNIX. Linux is a UNIX clone, and can run UNIX software (and vice versa) with minimal work (if any), but the code base are of different origins.
