Terry Pratchett's Discworld
«
on:

Am I such a dork because I'm addicted to Terry Pratchett's Discworld Series? I'm surprised I've yet to come across anyone else who's read some of these books. They're literal genius. They're comedy fantasy books with modern day satire intermeshed in the plot.
I think
Small Gods
or
Hogfather
are my favorite. Granted both of these revolve around their belief systems, one being gods the other being about holidays and voodoo rituals, the others are just as great.
Death is the best character, though.
So, if anyone else has read any, what is your favorite Discworld novel?

i'm a huge fan of Pratchett - his books are so cool. I've got all of them, and while there was a patch in the middle where it almost felt they were getting a bit samey (even though they were awesome) the last half a dozen have been pure genius
My favourite Pratchett book ever is Good Omens, but that's not a Discworld book. I can't really pick a Discworld book that I think is my favourite, they're all so good - Moving Pictures, maybe. The Amazing Maurice & His Educated Rodents was a lot of fun also. And Going Postal was terrific too. But all the others are just as good - any of the books with Granny Weatherwax in are fantastic. and likewise, any book with Death in (which is probably all of them) cos as you say, he is the best character

I nearly worship this guy
, its incredible... The shame is that here in Spain the latest book that have been published is
Interesting Times
but we're longing for more to come. Good omens its an awesome book and Crawley is the coolest character ever, but, in the discworld series, my favourite book is
Guards!Guards?
, and the Librarian is my favourite character.
I'm waiting for all the rest to come out in spanish..

Guards! Guards!
is the one that bursted my cherry. I love the Sam Vimes stories the most. I just can't get into the witches though...
And I don't much care for Rincewind. On a sidenote, check out
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rincewind
. Doesn't Rincewind look strangely like Tom Green?

heh, i started years and years ago when Sourcery had only just come out, and i read the Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic as my first Pratchett books - as such, Rincewind will always be a favourite of mine when he's about. I guess the witches are favoutites too because their stories often closely parody traditional stories. but really, i guess my favourite book is always the last one i read, they're all so good
sadly, i hope they never try and make a Discworld movie, it just will not be right no matter how much money they spend on it

my dad loves the Disworld novels. He's completely addicted. I' always saying that I'm going to read them but keep on forgetting. Also, I think it's amazing how Terry Pratchett is able to make a book every year.

There has been an attempt at a discworld movie!
Well, at least a made for tv movie. They did
Soul Music
. It's on IMDB here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159914/
I haven't read this one, but I do want to see the movie. Also I wouldn't mind seeing the stage plays they have floating around.

Guards Guards all the way! Erol was easily the coolest character ever to grace the pages of a book. Sure he didn't say a lot, mostly grunts and groans during his transformation, but that didn't hold george bush back did it?

that's a cartoon. they did that and wyrd sisters years ago for british tv. they're pretty good, not great, but good enough - i've got 'em on dvd. and there's some brilliant actors voices they've used. but cartoons work, cos you still need to use some imagination, which you can also use to cover over the gaps.
there's been a fan-made film of Lords and Ladies in germany. looks like they put a lot of love and effort into it, but it still looks a lot like a fan made film
also, down in Oz there's the film that SnowGum Films are doing of
Troll Bridge
. It's only a short story, so it's only a short film, but the bits of it i've seen so far look very impressive - an awful lot of post-production work and cgi being done... although there's still the hint of fanfilm about it.

I don't really have a favorite book or character, just a scene. It's when three of the horsemen get their horses stolen so they get smashed. Pestilence slidding under the table saying 'baaaa'. Good reading times.
My new school barely even knows who Terry Pratchett is. The Acclerated Reader program didn't have any of his books for months. Now there are two. Just two. The library itself only has one book.

Man that sucks, I got into Pratchett novels in high school thanks to the school library, they had most of what he'd written at that stage - nothing else to do when boarding (the school frowned upon swimming the Nerang river to get into Surfer's Paradise for some reason)

I've got the first half of this movie on tape. I've had it for years but have never brought the second half.

Good luck on that. Some people hold onto rights forever and never expect to do anything with it. Look at Fantastic Four, for example. Here's something I lifted from the trivia section under it's IMDB.com heading:
Not the first Fantastic Four movie. Another was made (The Fantastic Four (1994/II)) but never released because, unbeknown to the cast and crew, the movie was never intended to be released and was made only because the studio who owned the rights to make a Fantastic Four movie would have lost the rights if they did not begin production by a certain date.
Over 11 years AFTER that one the one we now know of today was made. The same powers that be that let Uwe Boll make movies is behind the reason Terry Gilliam will never release the movie rights.
