Here's a link that Scott Ramsoomair of VGCats discusses about making a webcomic.  Scroll down until you see "I want to make a comic, what do I do?"

I've been looking into making a webcomic for some time now, and have checked out the VG Cats FAQ. It was alot of help.

There is one thing I have been unable to gather much information about, though. Are there any good webcomic PHP scripts out there that are fairly simple to use and can be customised?

I done alot of searching, and have found pretty much nothing.

It doesn't necessarily require a lot of programming.  Technically, as long as you can make an HTML page with an image, you can put a web comic online.  Even if you're just scanning hand-drawn stuff like this

Now if you want to create a SQL database, RSS feeds, and administration tools...that's a lot more complex.  However, I wouldn't recommend starting out with that.  Start simple and see how it goes.

i'd rather use something i coded up alone for my comics (i'm not that good at starting a webcomic, but just saying) than use something someone else made. also... starting simple with webcomics is a great idea.

Hmm, I'm pretty good with flash. Why not just use flash to change pages and such?

Bingo. Even though flash can compress images pretty well while still maintaining good quality, you still have to consider the fact that it has to load the rest of the .swf as well as any other elements you have.

Also you have to consider things like browser compatibility, and flash player availability. Not to mention scripting Flash to update from databases and such can be a real pain if not done right... And Flash is only now starting to get CMS friendly.

For web comics, HTML is still the winning combo.

Hmm, Figures. I hang around new grounds a lot so, yet, never thought of it that way.

Other than that your next problem might be finding a free server.

Know any worthwhile free servers?

Best you can do is find a cheap server. A lot of people, including myself, keep recommending Servage.net.

Hmm. Cheap or expensive the rates are always in dollars. Being that I have no job, fat chance.
