I think it's creative.  I personally don't like it, but I see the atristic talent.  Bravo.

Sidenote: It is not my intention in any way to come off as an ass, I have been where you are at, we all have.

Personally, I think it is too dark, nothing really is accenuating in the picture. The colors are promising though. Although the beardy thing (guessing thats what it is, I originally thought it was a head piece, like a communications device, I had only heard about hellboy before, never seen), it is misleading.

So in summary:

Pros -----
+ Colors
+ Desire
+ Textures
+ Shading (this went both ways, but more toward the positive end of the spectrum)

Cons -----
- Face is a little puffy
- Beard is confusing
- No expressed attitude/feeling, just that he might be mad
- Lacking focus
