I am using flash MX to do my inking.
I turned the file to a gif and even shrank the thing and made it half as big, but Flash is taking FOREVER to trace bitmap... I don't ever remember it taking this long... it was so fast before... what am I doing wrong?

I just bought ( !!!!, yes i bought it!!!!!) Flash MX (ok, so only the edu version which is 1/5th the price)....

I am trying to color in Flash MX, but it won't let me do anything to the image that I imported...

nothing... I can't use the pencit to mark on it at all...

but it marks on the backround and the "new page" that is back there...but nada on the actual image... it just "bounces back" off of the page...

anyone help?

Flash is a vector base program. It was NOT meant to be used to edit bitmaps.

BUT..

If you still want to edit the bitmap in Flash, you need to select the bitmap and break it apart by going to.... Modify->Break Apart or go to Modify-> Trace Bitmap

After you break apart/or trace the bitmap, you will be able to draw on it.

yeah, i know.  i don't normally edit bitmaps in flash.  if anything, i'll go in with two layers, a sketch on the bottom one, lock it, and trace it on the top layer.  this helped when i was trying to get some characters from my sketch book into flash.  i'm working on a basic cartoon
