« on: August 24, 2005, 12:04:13 PM »

UPDATE: I JUST BOUGHT A PSP!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8214392575&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

I was thinking about getting a PSP off ebay. Now I had a few questions:
-Knowing that ebay isnt always reliable, is it safe to buy a PSP off ebay? Like, I wouldn't think of buying another LaCie HDD off ebay because they are terrible when refurbished, but are PSP's ok?
-Can I connect it to my mac to update firmware, etc.?

Thats really it, if I think of anything I'll ask.
Actually, whats a good price for an eBay PSP, if its Used, or New, Or Slightly Used. Thanks! Leave any other info that I should know about PSP's and or macs and PSPs

(google talk: tripletrouble42@gmail.com)

EDIT: Does the PSP COME with a USB cable?

For a used one, dont pay anything over 200 bucks, because you can get a used one at Gamestop or EB Games for that price. As for buying it online, it's risky, but youve got a good shot. if it's shipped well, it should survive the trip easily enough.

For the firmware updates, you can either do them via an online update, or you can download the version 2.0 update, drag it to the PSP on your desktop, and run it from the psp afterwards. you do need a usb cable for that though.

Yes it will. You get the USB cable for the PSP, connect it all up and then from the PSP select "USB Connection" to enable the USB mode. This then appears as a removable disk on the computer, and you can drag files onto it. Just be sure that when you're dragging files on it, they go in the correct directories. I can't remember them off hand, but a search around Google will definitely find it.

My brother got a PSP through eBay (although an import brand new from Japan) for £250 with two games. This was over 6 months ago now though, so prices should be cheaper. If you're buying from eBay, try to get a brand new one, maybe imported. The quality of the product really depends upon who is selling the item. The higher the feedback someone has, the more likely the item is in good description.

If you can, try to find a PSP of version prior to 1.5, so that you can run homebrew apps and games on it. There are emulators that will let you play gameboy games and other older systems games, like NES, etc. They even got DOS running on one a few weeks ago. But if you don't care for the apps, then just get the latest one and update it to version 2.0, so that you can get a web browser on it.

There's a problem with some of the newer games though, that will force your firmware to update to the latest version Sad  I may buy another PSP when I get back to the UK and keep this one for dev/emulation.

Ofcourse....if things pan out the way that I hope they will, I may have access to PSP stuff with a potential employer.

actually, some guys apparently just cracked open 2.0's firmware, so I expect some 2.0 compatible homebrew apps soon.

I'm not really into emulating all the stuff on the PSP. The reason is, there's no way it will run better than on my laptop. Also, I already have an emulator on my PDA (a NES one, but Mario was still on the NES!) so I don't want one on the PSP.

PSP would be good for emulation and other nonnative games, but for that I have my PDA. DOOM one handed!

No, Last year at work I really fucked up my right arm. Cant really use it for much. I tried playing a quick match of Marathon online, and my arm was just killing me within a few minutes.

Was packing vinyl siding and putting the boxes onto a skid so they could be shipped out when my foot got caught. As I tried to free my foot, I fell and hit my arm something fierce. Thats when I couldn't move my wrist any longer. Two weeks later I was having to load a 16' ridge beam onto a trailer when there was some snapping my my arm. Since then, my right arm has been pretty useless.

Holy crap, you need me to tell you how much that sucks.  I didn't mean to make fun of your injury.
