If only with the market were more like the 90's

I don't really get what you mean by this. the 90's SUCKED for comics. It nearly ruined the entire industry with all the watering down of the market with all of these independant comic companies coming in and flooding the market with boring x-men ripoffs. I am thankful that the market has become a lot smaller and has been able to really keep the bad stuff out. from '93-'99 comic shops were so bad I didn't step foot inside any. I really don't get all these people who praise Valliant and Malibu and other companies like those for making comics cool and stuff. I think they are the reason it suffered so badly. When the market boomed in the early 90's you saw some really great stuff come out from Marvel and DC, but when the whole scene got flooded with all the second rate no-name stuff it started a downward trend that nearly killed it all. A smaller market is always better when it comes to comics because it makes it harder to get recognized so you really need to be a serious talent to get into the bigtimes.

I beg to differ, I'm a minor aquantance of Freddie Williams, and in an interview I did with him, he specifically said that the market is impossible to break into, and this is holding back a lot of great talent because DC, Marvel, Image, etc. all want the same bullshit over and over again. They're almost afraid of hiring on new talent. Having said that, yes it keeps a lot of the crap out, but it also limits the availability of good stuff. It's not all encompassing good, there's some serious wrong about the current market.

With that said, I'd like to clarify, I meant the market from 90-94, where a TON of good artists broke through and made some serious names for themselves before the crap started to pile high. I really loved some of the talent from back then and I'm glad a lot of people got their chances back then. I just wish there'd be an opening of the gaps for some of the new talent to break through in a similar fashion as I've seen a lot of great comix as of late.

I know I am really going to come off as a snob, but guys like freddie are just whiney because they've never really had a big break and they wont because they aren't that good. When you have guys like Greg Land and Jim Cheung making such great art at Marvel and you didn't even know who they were 5 years ago I think your arguement goes right out the window. plenty of NEW talents are coming up and art in comics is better than ever right now in my opinion.

Hey, Freddie is actually doing fine, he's got a few comics to his name now. But let's use MAD! as an example. MAD! tried so hard to break through the barriers, even in the 90's and just didn't get any sort of breaks, yet he managed to get lucky with Battle Chasers (Just to give one major title) and made a huge name for himself. There's several artists that I know of that are good enough for the major leagues, but just are unfortunate in their promotion and exposure to the public, and this is what I'm talking about. There's so many people yipping at the shins of the big dogs (marvel, dc, what have you) that some of the real contenders sometimes get lost in the noise.

When you have guys like Greg Land and Jim Cheung making such great art at Marvel and you didn't even know who they were 5 years ago I think your arguement goes right out the window. plenty of NEW talents are coming up and art in comics is better than ever right now in my opinion.

Hey I knew of Jim Cheung long before his stint at Marvel, in fact his work on Scion, issue #6 (the first one I saw with him in it) was simply beautiful, I tried to follow him closely and was rather overjoyed to see someone break through, especially after seeing his cover for the "What if Magneto had created the X-Men with Professor X" (or however that title goes). That's what I want to see more of, some really great artists breaking through.

I yelped in joy when I saw that comic, after having been on a hiatus from comics due to money and job problems, and nearly lost my head when I read he was doing Young Avengers.

Scion started in 2000, I'm damn certain of it... #6 would have been either October, November or December, I don't feel like digging around for it, I'm sure I could google it up.

So after googling:

2000 Cheesy

November to be exact. I was almost dead on ^_^ It meets your mark, so I still knew about him before he made it really big. And yeah, his Young Avengers made me soil myself in ways best left undescribed, couldn't pick it up, but I skimmed through it with lust.
