yeah, it's an alright game.  I like that the entire map streams off the Disc.  That's a nice touch.  I don't know what it is, though... it just didn't have me as hooked as the first two (well, first two for the PS2).  Although, occasionally if I'm driving and hear Running Down a Dream, I get the craving to go home and start playing.

there is one bad thing about the game though, the radio stations are not as funny as in vice city I think.

I found it too complicated after playing the first two on pc.  I hate using the analog thumbsticks to play games.

Actually, that was my biggest complaint off the bat.  I was used to using the d-pad for the other two...  I just couldn't get used to the sticks for a long time.  And the radio stations aren't as great as the ones in Vice City, but I think the weather Reports and News reports are pretty cool.  They're in tune with what's really happening.

The only reason I'm cofortable about the thumbsticks is because Enter the Matrix made you use them, I played that so much I just got used to it

u hafta really sit with the game and play hardcore for a bit to get pulled into it.  i got tired of the thug dialogue and that overall orange hue to everything.  but there are many an amazing feature in the game that more then compensate for its shortcomings.  most noticeably are control improvements (little things like being able to have an action to jump a fence rather than having to rely on game glitches to get u over).  either way, the game is very solid.  it takes the breakthroughs they made with Vice City and combined it with the more solid terrain and gameplay elements of 3 and u get a great game overall that will surely take forever to beat.

in fact... the guy who game tested it took 100 hours to beat it 100% (go figure, 100 for 100%).  so my neighbor who has beaten both of the previous PS2 titles is working into his 73rd hour now to beat it, and has very little left, he's at 94.x% done

I got this game for Chistmas and tried playing it last night.

It seemed kinda.. bleh. I mean, I still wanna play, but it hasn't reeled me in nearly as bad as in Vice City.

I feel like it's TOO easy to get a wanted level and the cops have NO LOGIC. In Vice City if you beat down a guy a cop was chasing - BONUS! In this one, I just get cops shooting at me. I dun like that. And It's harder to lose the wanted levels. I got lost after the spraypainting. I couldn't find the other spot I was supposed to tag.

~ shrugs ~

But, it really is a nice game. I mean, after all, it has freakin' Depeche Mode in the soundtrack...... for one song

I was planning to get this on Xbox next year, but When I played it recently on my cousin's PS2 I instantly put that game money back into my Adobe Illustrator fund.

Grand Theft Auto III:
Back in the day when I first played GTA III, I was totally immersed in the size and freedom you had. I mean, working for the mob was freakin' awesome!

Pros:
-A huge world to run around in
-Great story
-Awesome radio
-Heaps of unique jumps

Cons:
-Some crappy missions
-Cars not fast enough
-No bikes

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City:
When I first played Vice City I felt even more immersed than I was when I played GTA III. There was so much more you could do! Ride motorcycles, use a HUGE array of weapons, own property, change clothes and some other stuff that was probably cool too.

Pros:
-Bikes
-Even bigger world
-Own property
-Even better radio
-HEAPS of weapons

Cons:
-Flat landscape
-Some crappy missions

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas:
When I first played San Andreas I though I was going to be immersed again, but instead I was hit in the face with a big bowl of Bland Flakes.

Firstly, I hate the new control scheme, It makes the game horrible to play and hard to control. Secondly, the jet-pack, it ruins the game entirely! "Hmm... let's make the player be able to go anywhere they want in the entire map without a single bother!"

I like having to travel around in cars and on bikes to get to my destination, not just flying there easy as pie.

The graphics, in my opinion look exactly like the graphics in GTA III. They're pretty awful and the characters have crappy animations, The throwing up animation looks HORRIBLE, among others...

Overall it has not fulfilled what they said they were going to do with this game and it has left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm wondering whether or not to buy, or even play the next GTA game.

Pros:
-Lock-on melee fighting
-Some new vehicles
-Some new features that help a lot

Cons:
-Awful graphics that have had no upgrade
-No rag-dolls
-Crappy controls
-The jet-pack
-------

Basically, GTA VC > GTA III > Dung pile > GTA SA.

well i been playing it since it came out (when i've managed to grab a chance away from RL) and i'm as addicted to this as i was to to GTA3 and Vice City - i think it's brilliant. admittedly, the first set of missions, getting around Los Santos, are a little slow and it's a pain trying to get enough money to enjoy yourself - but once you get the money and get around the map more to find the fast cars, it's brilliant
i ain't got to the jet pack thing - but surely you don't have to use it? i mean, i can see why they've done it - takes AGES driving back and forth between Los Santos and San Fierro - but it's still fun cos even though you know the road, you still loose the damn thing on the corner and tumble down the hillside

as for the orange tint - did you not notice the washed out colours of vice city? and have you played GTA3 recently? it was a shock, i'd forgotten how awful the weather is in Liberty City - it's _always_ raining or foggy. it's what differentiates the cities/games from each other

You don't get the jet-pack for a long time (About 80% of the way through the missions, and even then it ain't that good. I have it, I've used it about 5 times in the 2 months I've had it. It's just not that good, to me anyway. Sure, it lets you go anywhere, but helicopters did that in Vice City anyway, and if you could fly the dodo well, the same goes for GTA 3.

I see this complaint everywhere and it astounds me how people can make this one time and time again. Have you seen the size of the map? Have you noticed there are absolutely no loading screens, anywhere? If the graphics got any better, the game would be so slow, you'd think you were going backwards. The PS2 has to work its' nuts off just to get the graphics as good as they are, when technology gets better, then you can make this complaint. As it stands, I don't think you gave it any consideration at all.

In my opinion the controls are improved, I especially like the new improved manual aiming.

you know that the dj chatter on the stations changes as you go through the game - whereas in vice city, you knew what the dialogue would be in the end between one song and the next, in san andreas, each song has several different intros and outros - and they become unlocked as you progress, so it keeps it different.
and anyway, SF UR owns any of the stations from VC. i just wish lazlo would get his own talk show again - really miss that from GTA3

i know people used to use the d-pad to control, but really, there's no reason why any PS2 game should use the d-pad for that, especially for a driving game, you need the analogue controls to finess your steering, especially on the bikes, or flying helicopters - two sticks is a must then

*SPOILER*

It's a secret military project that you hi-jack for a white-haired hyperactive hippy and use it to steal a flourescent green alien substance from a moving freight train...

...no seriously, I'm not making this up.

I don't really like the idea of a jet-pack neither, a little too 'sci-fi' for a GTA game. But it's kinda fun.
