I am faced with the ultimate question...

Games or Mac?

Okay, perhaps I should go into detail.

I've been saving up for a little while now and in a very short period of time, I will have enough money to replace one of the two computers I use in my house. There is my laptop, which I use primarily for internet, web-surfing, AIM etc. Then there is my basement PC, which I use for gaming. Heh. Yeah right.

Unfortunately for me, they both suck. My laptop only has FOUR GIGS OF MEMORY! ARGH!! Needless to say, it isn't very good at what it does (web-surfing). If I replace my laptop, I'm definitely getting a Mac. Macs are the ultimate browsing machines, and they look cool to boot. Plus, what kind of Applegeeks fan am I if I don't even have a Mac to call my very own?

Unfortunately for Macintosh, if I replace my gaming computer, its definitely going to be a Windows. I know that Macintosh has a few good games (WC3, for example), but for a hardcore gamer like me, that isn't enough. My current PC has just recently been updated from a 98 to an XP, but that doesn't really help much. It only has 11 gigs, which, while better than my laptop, isn't nearly good enough. Also, since its the oldest piece of shit EVER, it has an Intel graphics card with NO AGB PORT! YEARGH! I heard about PCI from the #applegeeks channel, but still! 11 gigs?! Not to mention my RAM is probably almost spent. Definitely need a new one here. Also, I've had Battlefield 1942 for quite a few months now, but have been unable to play it...YEARGH! I DESIRE WWII FPS ONLINE MULTIPLAYER AWESOMENESS!!

So the question remains...

Games or Mac?

Somebody help me...

I'll be needing help too if 4 Gigabytes of memory isn't enough for me to use the internet

I'm doing fine with 256 Megabytes.

First I must simply comment on your avatar Gangster. Very hilarious stuff.

And with that on to your question...

Games or Mac?

So basically it sounds like you use your laptop for websurfing and your desktop for gaming...

Now I don't mean this in a bad way or anything so don't hate me, but have you possibly considered buying your next cpu for more.....important reasons?

Now I have no clue how old you are so your outlook on this situation may vary completely from mine, but when I was getting a new computer I debated about just getting a regular old PC. A young man can't help but look at computers from the "pc = games - mac = no games" perspective, but when I saw it from that aspect and asked myself, "What are you really buying this computer for? Games, or your future job field?" the choice became kind of clear...

Again as I said before your outlook on the situation may be totally different from mine. I can only give you my own opinion based on my own outlook. If all you want a new cpu for is gaming and websurfing more power to you I guess, but if I were you I'd possibly look for a few more reasons than those.

Nice avvy Gangster.

My say is to upgrade your PC.
And for clarity's sake... when you mentioned 40GB of memory, did you mean Hard Disk space or RAM?

You know, paint me orange and call me Charlie, but I'd say he was talking about hard disk space, in all instances. So, 4 and 11Gb disk space, as opposed to 4 and 11Gb of physical memory. Jeebus! The only reason you'd need that much memory is for seriously hardcore video, image or 3d editing.

Games or Mac?

Now, okay - you've never owned a Mac before. As such, I'm kind of willing to accept that you're a little vague about this, but okay. There is no longer a serious difference between Windows machines and the Mac in terms of the number of games available.

Want some proof? Well, okay - if there weren't any games of the Mac, please explain to me the existence of www.macgamer.com and www.insidemacgames.com. Sure, games come a little later, but that's not the same thing. Halo, UT2004, Raven Shield, America's Army and any number of First Person Shooters are out for the Mac, and have been for ages. With games like UT, they come out simultaneously with the PC version, too.

There is a gaming service called GameRanger, which has support for well over a hundred games intergrated directly into it. It's free, and while it's been ages since I used it (it's kind of hard when the Administrator, Scott Kevill, is a permaban happy little boy), the service is excellent. There is a full list of games it supports here

Dude, seriously - there's very little difference these days. Don't worry about it - just get the Mac, and you'll add to the number of people who own one. Adding to Apple's market share makes them a larger player in the market, which means that every sale they make means that gaming companies take them more and more seriously, and so make games for them earlier. Jumping on the bandwagon really does make it go faster.

Sweet...

Forgive my ignorance. I come from a dominantly PC-based family. My uncle is the only one who even LIKES Mac, and my father makes fun of him for it quite often. I suppose my decision has been made.

Prepare yourselves, Applegeeks, for your newest ultra-nerd. For I shalt buyeth a Mac...eth...

Well, if you're a hardcore gamer and console games aren't satisfying your thirst for amazing gameplay, then you have a problem.

I'm a gamer, but  I own a Mac (2 actually), I prefer gaming on consoles (i own a Ps2, Xbox and a Gamecube, but that's collecting dust) and I use my Mac for internet stuff, design, photography.

The Mac OS is a lot better and more reliable than Windows. A Mac can do and run anything a PC can and maybe even a bit better (except for games). You can usually get the same applications for the Mac that you could find on the PC.

But don't go buying a Mac just because you feel the need to own one. Apple computers are amazing things, but it's really upto you to know what you need, and from the looks of things, you love gaming, so maybe an Apple computer should wait a bit until you satisfy your urge of gaming? (or get enough money to own a Pc and a Mac Wink)

EDIT: I just read the post that said Mac's have most of the PC games. That's somewhat true, but the release date's aren't the same and most of the time, us Mac users have to wait a month or two before a game is released. Just research this before you go out and buy a Mac, we don't want you to be disappointed do we?
