I find it a rather interesting topic Ananth...

My personal opinion is that if you find a way of expressing yourself and having an impact with it in your enviroment then you can consider it a form of art.

But most of it is based on personal opinions tho... Art is just an opinion.

Comics are art... and doubly so.

They are not just artwork in a visual form, but written as well. Literature is considered an artform, so why would it diminish if it were included in a comic? What if I were to make Paradise Lost into a comic (Which would be beautiful to see but ONE HELLA HUGE PROJECT)? Would the literature loose any value when added to visual representation? Of course I'm offerring up a ton of rhetorical questions, but the fact of the matter is that the "Artists" drawing the comics, as was stated by Ananth, have to draw a ton of different elements in varying ways to acheive not only an image, but an image that convey's a story, and that alone requires artistic talent that would be appreciated by masters...

For example, if I were to take a play, let's say Richard III by Shakespear, and then make a comic based on it, I'd have to be able to draw the emotions, I'd have to be able to draw the clothing of the period, I'd have to be able to draw the weapons and buildings of the period, I'd have to be able to draw the landscapes of the setting as seen at that time, and I'd also have to convey the emotions and visual cues in an artistic manner. Then, I'd probably have to colour all that (which in itself is an incredibly huge task), and on TOP of all that, I'd have to add the speech in... It's not an easy thing and requires a huge amount of artistic talent...

That's why comics are art....

In my opinion, comics are one of the highest forms of art. Not only are you combining two kinds of art (liturature and, well, art), but you also have everything which spawns off of it, be in conversations (which in come sense can be called art, as long as there are no stupid asses partaking in said convos), or something else.

-breath-

But then you also have the thing of having people interpret your liturature, using their imagenations to figure out the characters and piture things. And with art, the interpretation thing comes in too. With comics, you pretty much tell people what both things means.

But that dosen't mean it isn't art. It is. I still think it's the highest form of art.

I wouldn't necessarily call any form of art higher than another.  Art is art, it incorporates a very large variey of factors into it.  Comics do definitly have to take care of dialogue, as well as the drawing itself.  Saying that comics aren't a form of art is like saying painting isn't a form of art.  Both require innovation, imagination, skill, etc.  both are asthetically pleasing to the eye.  I really can't think of any arguement supporting comics being considered non-art....

Now what was that about comics not being the highest art form?

I'm just saying, do you think painting is a leser form of art just because painters don't do dialogue, etc?

It's definitely an art form, as far as I'm concerned.  Coincidentally, the night before it was blogged about, I read a 10 page article from the NY Times about the rise of the Graphic Novel as a visual/literary art form, focused mainly on the US side of things.  Oh good, looks like it is still up for the moment, read it while you can(sourced from Neil Gaiman's excellent blog).

All I'm thinking is that everybody has different tastes...

people just tend to recognize it more as art if they are actually attracted to it.

To the contrary, I think this is a great idea for a thread. ^_^ Real life is one thing, because if you're having this discussion with people who consider themselves artists, then you may be discussing something that they consider very close to them. Debates can get heated, and dissolve into arguments. In a forum, everyone has time to stop, reflect, and reply.

So go ahead. ^_^ I will watch with great curiousity.

This is a topic I just had to post on.

I've always believed that in order to define art, you must define an artist. Personally, I've always defined an artist as someone who is in a relentless pursuit of skill in order to represent how he see's himself and the rest of the world. Some might say that doesn't apply to comic artists, but I'd disagree. Take a look at Spider-Man comics through out the years. The art has changed drastically, but it's still depecting the same person and the same place. Aside from the addition of computers, which have really only had a drastic affect on coloring. The art has changed because the artists have changed, and each one over the years made their own decisions when representing this world. Those descisions were based on who the artist was and how they wanted to represent the world. Comic artists should be accepted as artists. It's just that some people are in love with this idea of a starving artist that doesn't get appreciated until he's dead.
