DC Writers Ruining Comics?

So I rarely read comics but Vman reads them a lot and tells me what's going on.
Lately his biggest thing is the Batman RIP bit. He tells me that how Batman goes down is just terrible and I agree with him.
Anyways big point to this thread is do you think the writers DC hires are utter crap? Do you think they need to switch out some old writers for some new ones or just bring in some new blood to help the old?
DC always has open submission for artists but not for writers. They say they aren't looking for any but I believe they need to. Their old ones seem to be grasping at straws here. There are plenty of awesome writers just looking for their big break. They have great ideas that aren't just new but also stick to some of the classic stuff.
What do you guys think?

Now I haven't read any Batman R.I.P. yet, but Grant Morrison has written one of the best Batman stories of all time (Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth). He knows the material, and he's proven himself a decent writer, so I find it hard to believe the current arc would be 'utter crap'. It'll probably all make sense in the end.

Even great writers can have terrible ideas.

I was just told the other day that they killed Alfred in the RIP thing.
See. How dumb is that? Yes I know Alfred's been there for forever and stuff but I believe he's an essential part of any Batman comic.
Apparently Kevin Smith is part of the writing crew for this crap. At least they made it look like he was. I'll have to actually go check. But if he is, I'm sad to say, I don't like him as much as I did.

*gasp!* How can you say that about Kevin Smith?
They're just trying to freshen things up. Even if they did do it, it's just a story arc..I'm sure things will go back later.

I just read Batman 676-678, and I don't think Alfred is dead. Badly beaten up, sure, but not dead.

This is also to answer the post above mine.
Well I hope he's just badly beaten up.
And as for it just being a story arc, well I'm tired of them doing shitty arcs. I mean they decide to kill someone off because it's shocking and then later on they bring them back because, OMG it's shocking O_O and because people get pissed that they've killed someone off.
Why can't we just have a story arc that's plausible and gets the readers' attention without the drama like that? Why can't DC bring in good writers who can actually tell a story. I mean they don't have to try very hard. The readers are already endeared to the characters because they've been around a long time.
I mean do the stories have to sound like a stupid soap opera?

i'm not attacking just asking. are you arguing that marvel is better, has a better writing staff? i'm just curious because they've been doing the same crap for years now with m-day, civil war, and now the skrull invasion. i see it as a similar "soap opera" set up that's being prolonged. please elaborate for me so i can get a better idea of what the specific argument is about.

Nope I'm not saying Marvel is better. I just was focused on DC for the moment. I'm actually tired of the crap in Marvel as well. Both companies are grasping at straws now. People are so afraid to hire brand new writers, thinking that it will ruin stuff, so they go for the older writers that everyone knows. But that's bad because it means that they may be all out of good, new ideas. They bring in famous writers (like Kevin Smith, not Tamora Pierce who did the new White Tiger, cause she was actually good thank god) hoping that they'll be able to do something, but they don't bother to put a restriction on the stuff they do so we end up getting crap like we've been getting recently.

My one response to this thread's general idea:
Wait, Marvel didn't do this already with Civil War?

Marvel and DC both need to invest in finding some new writing talent and just quit with these big events. The fact is they're the two big names in comics and these events are just them trying to one up one another in what big stunts they can pull.
I liked Kevin Smith when he worked on Green Arrow after he was revived for a while. But then there weren't any big crossover events in that period it was just a faily simple series of well told stories with an interesting host of characters both new and classic. Just saw his name pop up and thought I'd mention that. Tamora Pierce's run on White Tiger was really good too.
It's sad that Jarvis and Alfred are both either dead or have been severly injured by super villains in these latest events though. Those guys are like your grandpa and you don't want to see grandpa beaten by super villains or replaced by a skrull.

from a business perspective though, it's selling. why mess with a good thing? a good thing being pools filled with money to swim in during lunch and not good stories.
