Why are you looking at me like that? o.O?

« on: December 18, 2007, 06:56:33 PM »

Hey ^_^

I'm getting my MacBook Pro Soon (although i was to wait until after this year's macworld expo) and I'm wondering, which should i get? A glossy or a matte screen? I will occasionally be using it outside if it's a nice day or i can't go inside (I'll have a portable modem; there's another question, which to get? a 3 modem, Vodaphone modem, Orange modem, or O2 modem? =p ), but I'm not rly a graphic designer so i don't rly need colour accuracy that much. I want a vibrant screen, but i still want to see the screen.

thankyou ^_^

I'd go with glossy. Honestly, it's not so bad outdoors, and I think it looks better.

I hate glossy.

Whenever I've used a laptop with a glossy screen, the glare was horrendous.  I'd always be in a lighted room (never tried it outside because I've never owned or will own a glossy screen) and have some glare coming in and I can't see like a good 1/3 of the screen.

Plus it's annoying to try and show a customer a computer and they can't see because of a godawful glare.

Matte, imo.

I originally wanted a matte screen, but with my luck, they were out of stock. I purchased a glossy and I haven't had a second thought yet. The glare is really not that bad either. You can hardly notice it.

While I generally hate glossy screens, I don't mind the MacBook/Pro's. For some reason, it's not as bad as some others. I show customers the glossy versions of the macbook all day long at work, and never really have a problem with it, even considering the blinding Apple Store overhead lights.

Personally, I like the glossy now. I wasn't sure at first, but it never really bothers me, even outdoors in bright light. The reflections are minimal, which surprised me, considering how bad reflections get on some of the other laptops I've used(glossy Sony screen anyone? gah). I like that it makes the colors more colorful too.

But to each their own. Can I suggest stopping by your local (if you have a local) Apple Store and trying each one out?

i'd go with matte

i tried to watch a movie on the plane with my glossy macbook from work. and it looks like looking in a mirror, you can see the whole plane behind you, but not so much what was on screen.

Reviving this thread (even though the advise has already been taken) just to keep things all in one place:

General consensus regarding glossy screens is usually quite negative. High reflection of outside light can be a huge bother especially if you are using the screen specifically for your (color management, graphic design, etc) work.
That being said, I recently came into posetion of a glossly 17 inch Macbook Pro (through work) and have had the chance to use both matte and glossy iMacs of various sizes for graphic / web design . At first I was skeptical, but after having a solid chance to use them I see both sides of the spectrum. I am fortunate enough to have a workspace where I can control the ambient light around me and can say that in this environment I would go glossy with a personal purchase in a heart beat. The main reason is color definition and contrast. I find I can get much subtler color blends and greater contrast (almost to a negative effect as some monitors won't be able to pick up such details). Also its got quite the epic effect for gaming Wink.

Basically Matte = laptops you plan to use outside, uncontrolled lighting conditions, Glossy = high performance to be used in controlled settings. Note: This is all based on what I notice as a designer, if you can't tell the difference, go matte! Its far more versatile Smiley

Just my two cents.
