I'm anxious to see some discussion on rap music in this forum.  I've searched around enough and there's clearly not enough exposure to good rap music, as well as, not enough discussion on it.

Soooo... I'm a T.I. fan.  Who's heard his new joint 'Big Things Poppin'?  Pretty good stuff coming from him and Mannie Fresh!

i find i liked some of Fort Minor's stuff but a lot of it sounded the same... and also really amateur.  Not in terms of quality, mind you, but the tracks he rapped over sounded like the average do-it-yourself rap beat that EVERY wannabe puts together for their demo tapes.  HOWEVER, his mixtape stuff was freaking awesome!

you know who else has pretty sweet rhymes and beats?  Mike Jones and Chamillionaire!  Texas rap is really starting to come up!

Yea but I like what Fort Minor raps about, not your every day raps about cars, money and hoes. And dude, he worked with two greats from the rap game: Common and Black Thought (from The Roots). I have great respect for them. I saw them in concert last year and they put on an amazing live show.

Mike Jones..I just find him to be ridiculously funny lol

Oh, someone else that's amazing (and I know Nick will agree): Immortal Technique

Ying Yang Twins FTW. I love to listen to these guys.

I also like to listen to ICP, mostly because their music is really twisted and usually pretty disgusting, and I enjoy that kind of thing. lol

Listen to Bloodhoung Gang.  They're better and even more crude and they just rhyme better (IMO)

Oh, someone else that's amazing (and I know Nick will agree): Immortal Technique
Immortal Technique is like Sagat in Street Fighter:

"Everytime Sagat uses a crouching feirce, a child loses its parents and a far-off galaxy is obliterated resulting in the matmatical chaos that is Sagat's priority."

For those that don't play fighting games:  Sagat, and thereby, Immortal Technique, are on a whole 'nother level of destructiveness.

Mike Jones is trash, but that's just to me.  Chamillionaire is destructive to a whole nother level.  If I can find it, I'll link the video to youtube I saw....he impersonated fifty rappers from Texas.  And not badly, I mean REALLY well.  I couldn't even tell they were Chamillionaire until I read it, and even then I didn't believe it.

i really like some of the newer stuff by Three 6 Mafia.  their beats are just so sick! i'm not a fan of DJ Paul though (he's so crude and his style is quite bland) although Juicy J has really great flow!

I haven't really listened to any Three 6 besides "Ridin' Spinnaz" and that's only because I've gone on YTMND too many times during class XD

As for rap in general, I have to plug my faves:

N.W.A (And in that vein, their solo careers, especially Dr. Dre's, Ice Cube's, and The D.O.C's)
Wu-Tang (but I mentioned them already)
2pac (Because what rap thread is complete without 2pac, HONESTLY???)
Immortal Tech (Jonas mentioned him, but his rhymes are nasty)
Beastie Boys (guys who made white people rapping cool ((debatable)))

Anybody got any more? Cheesy

I for one am not a big fan of the Snap Music, Hyphy, or the large majority of the Southern rap. I prefer actual lyricists for my rap/hip-hop.

Immortal Tech
Tupac
Nas
Common
Tailb Kweli
Pharoahe Monch
Fugees
k-os
Lupe Fiasco
The Roots

I'm in old school thing, because nowdays rap/hiphop is so violent.

The irony is that it's unnecessarily violent.  Most of these newer rappers don't come from poor neighborhoods or AS poor neighborhoods anymore.  Not only that, the only reason they rap violent is because the West Coast (Specifically, NWA, Cypress Hill, 2pac, and even Snoop) made it popular.  Before that, rap was about representing your area, and telling people to get education, to get out of the streets.

When West Coast originally started, it was about showing the world what racists cops were, and their mayors and governors not only for paying them, but also for allowing such things as the Rodney King incident (among the general tactics of the LAPD in "minority" areas like Compton, Inglewood, Crenshaw, ect).  It was a violent response showing their outrage that "white America (or "Amerika," as most spell it)" was allowing their rights to not only be infringed upon, but to nearly revert back to the Jim Crow days.  They thought if the Police were against them, and the government was against them, and the people around them were against them, then who could they really trust? Themselves, and those in their hoods, that's it. They figured violence was the only answer (Not justifying their reasonings for being violent, mind you guys, just explaining the reasons for the music as I understand them.  This whole rant is one big, giant "IMO")

Now, people rap gangsta because it's popular, largely thanks to acts from the West like NWA or 2pac.  The whole "G-Funk" sound wouldn't have been born without Dr. Dre, and now most of rap utilizes it, or did at a point.

Also jusme, you have some awesome taste Cheesy

Question: Nerdcore. What's everybody think of it? Some artists to look up if you are unfamiliar with the genre:

MC Frontalot
MC Hawking
mc chris
Optimous Rhyme
yt cracker
(just to name a few)

Also, crunk music: has it really killed rap in general, or are there reasons to keep it around?

(If I sound like an asshole, I'm sorry, just trying to keep the discussion going Wink )

i actually don't mind crunk and all that!  sure it's clearly stupid but that's part of its charm IMO.  it's not all about the gangsta lifestyle and what better medium for rappers to promote enjoying life or "getting crunk" than with the lifestyle itself emitted through the music.  Lil Jon is totally retarded.  no questions asked.  but homeboy's got money (no questions asked)... and some pretty dope beats!  i LOVE southern music's beats!

so my rap roundup:
T.I.
Lupe Fiasco
K-Os
Pharrell Williams
OutKast
Kanye West
Rhymefest
Ludacris

but that's for now, anyways!  this list changes every so often (it only really takes a new song to shift it)!
