Just curious as to what games people think have had the best soundtracks?

Personally, the soundtrack for Devil May Cry 3 is my favorite at this point; there are some repeats and variations of the same tracks here and there, but overall it's very solid, IMO.

Mainly curious because I love a lot of game music, and am looking for more.

Oblivion has a pretty good soundtrack -- the music is by Jeremy Soule (the guy who composed the music for the Lord of the Rings movies)

FFVII
FFVI
FFVIX
FFX

Now, for those things NON Final Fantasy....

Devil May Cry 3
Gears of War (really well done orchestration)
Guilty Gear XX: The Midnight Carnival (Metal ftw!)
Katamari Damacy (.....shut up >_> )
SSX 3 (It's got some good techno and hip hop in it)
Metal Gear Solid 3
Guitar Hero I and II (Especially....TROOGGGDOOOOOORRRR!)

I'll post more when I think of others...

Shadow of the Colossus
Fable
Halo (1 and 2)
GTA: Vice City and
Katamari Damacy

And all the soundtracks by Nobuo Uematsu and Koji Kondo (Final Fantasy/SquareEnix and Nintendo Games Respectively)

Hitman 2, Hitman : Blood money. Blade runner ..well, duh..

and Fable, as the top pick, ever.

You just can't go against Danny Elfman =)

The nice thing about Morrowind (PC) is the soundtrack was a folder of mp3s you could use anywhere. 7 'explore' tracks and 7 'battle' tracks. Jeremy Soule did a great job with them.

No one's mentioned Halo 1 or 2 yet? Martin O'Donnell is as essential to the storytelling as anyone in Bungie.
StarCraft and WarCraft III are both excellent albums for spacing out to while driving or playing other games. I put those on along with the Soul Reaver 1 & 2 tracks when playing Battle for Wesnoth.

Anyone heavily into Megaman should check out The Protomen.

Oh, and the highest quality arrangements for video game remixes new and old that I've found across the web is at OverClocked Remix. Some games have more remixes than others (Mario, FF, Zelda), but there's some rare gems as well. One recently was from Jojo's Mystic Quest...

I'll say Chrono Cross. Especially the intro music, just fantastic. Oh yes, Golden Sun and Golden Sun 2 had simply wonderful music. Let's see...I was thinking of one other....oh yes. Phantasy Star 4, that had some really good music too.

I'm gonna have to say the best is Half-Life 2. My god, if you haven't heard it, you should. It goes so perfectly with the game itself. Seriously, this may sound lame, but one of the reasons I play it so often is to listen to the soundtrack while playing in the world it was created for. ^_^

What games other than Halo and Splinter Cell have dynamic music engines?

(that means the music changes smoothly based on one's situation)

If I played a wider range of games i could probably say more than Final Fantasy(PS and PS2), Halo, and Halo 2.

And whoever said you can't go wrong with Danny Elfman is totally right!
