Internet Radio Screwed by RIAA

Proposed changes in royalty rates paid to the RIAA are being passed by the CRB (Copyright Royalty Board) which will cause most Internet Radio broadcasters to discontinue operations. There is a short window of opportunity to appeal these outrageous rate increases, that will only profit the RIAA, big brain-dead broadcasters, politicians and lawyers in the short term.. and no one in the long term.. we the Public will suffer the consequences...
Help support Internet Radio by signing this petition...
http://www.petitiononline.com/SIR2007r/petition.html
Read more here...

If you use and love, Radio Paradise (as I do), SOMA.fm, Live365, Pandora and many, many others.. you MUST take action now.. or these great resources for new music will have to close up shop, due to excessive royalty rates. Do you want to lose the choice that we now have? I personally do not....
copied from a friend on another forum, i thought it was important enough to share. you can only sign if you're a US citizen, but i use many of these services from the UK so i'm sure this will effect people worldwide.
if you can't sign it, please share it with people who can.
[edit]
this artical
is pretty helpful too.
incase you're wondering what this covers, it doesn't just include classic radio, it includes systems like pandora and lastfm (although thankyfully lastfm is based in the uk).
if you don't want to read that artical, i'll summarise it for you:
large internet broadcasters will have to shut down, medium sized broadcasters will have to shutdown, and you guessed it, small broadcasters too.
if you listen to any music online, please sign this petition.

if no one's broadcasting, they're not making any money anyway. i don't think they really worked this one out...
here's another nice stat: if this is put through, pandora will owe around $4 billion instantly because the law will back date and cover all of 2006 as well.

Okay, the fucked up thing about this is....
They bitch about us listening to streaming music online... and that we can record it by buying software to record it...
What about when people could record songs from actual radio stations to cassette tapes? What difference is it? There isn't!
fuckers....

Well here's something that just popped in my head. Well the way I see it there is an audience for internet radio right? There are also a lot of independent artists out there, and I'm sure you can check out their sites or various communities that they are members of. Get contracts with them (after screening of course), and then see how it goes. Those who own internet radio, I'm assuming, know their music. Also those who don't work for big companies which the RIAA represent wouldn't mind the publicity.
Unless the RIAA has some all encompassing clause...O.o?
Just a thought, but yeah that is bullshit at its finest.

this, is BULLSHIT
seriously, they're not getting enough dough or what ? The world cannot, and I seriously mean, cannot persist developing in the way it is. It's incredible, they're strategies are as stupid, if not more, than Sonys. In 5 years, if this keeps going the way it is, the only way you'll ever hear music , is if you learn to play an instrument, and even then, upon the purchase you'll have to pay an extra fee in case you ever learn to play it really good and EVER want to either publish it or play it for your friends... I'm not from the states and the piece of crap petition is limited to just the residents of the states,so please, sign the petition. It won't stop at this, it won't just be the music industry, it'll be everything, our only "entertainment" anywhere, will be advertising, because nobody will produce enough money to cover the fees that are imposed on them. We cannot , should not sit back and do nothing.

If it is retroactive to the beginning of 2006, that makes it an ex post facto law, correct? And Article One, Section Nine of the Constitution states that ex post facto laws (and bills of attainder, among other things) cannot be passed, correct?

This is just a load of bullshit. Where does the RIAA get the balls to do something like this? Do they really want us to steal music? I'm sure they make money off these streaming sties, so whats their problem? I think they need to get their heads out of their asses.

Hi My Name is DJ Wacoede I'm the Assistant Station Manager for a online radio station (a quick Google search will turn me up) I've been a long time reader of Applegeeks and I'm glad to see you guys supporting Internet Radio currently there is another site
http://www.savenetradio.org
there's at least 20-30 stations signed up there on the web casters site
As to something everyone outside the US can do? do the same as the US citizens are doing contact your local government reps and tell them what the RIAA is doing is not acceptable this way more countries wont try this
We all know that a lot of countries follow suit with the US in what it does so lets not wait to be reacting
But rant over (the RIAA get me going and I'm a brit
) Thanks for reading oh and if your interested in showing support here's a couple of banners for the SaveNetRadio site

The RIAA is one of the most stupid screwed up corporation out there. Several years back they demanded royalty fees from a local coffee shop/cafe. Why? Well, they do have some live music, but by people who write their own songs, and are not represented by the RIAA for royalties. So that can't be the reason. The reason was, in the office, behind a closed door, there was a CD player, and they reasoned that the CD player might be heard by people in the cafe, so that would qualify as publicly playing music that the RIAA could charge royalties for. The cafe said if they had to pay out the royalty fees, they probably couldn't survive and stay in business. If memory serves, the cafe won. There is a saying, "Cutting of your nose, despite your face."
