While on my quest to find a new band I could obsess over, I came along Isis from someone's MySpace song. (There's some good that comes from that site? gasp)  Needless to say... I'm in love.

I started off with Celestial, which is a good primer album if you've never heard Isis.  Darkshine recommended Panopticon, which is a really good album, but I found myself going back to Celestial, but Celestial did get a little old after listening it countless times on repeat, so I bought In the Absence of Truth.  I've seriously fallen in love with this album and this band.

They sound similar to TOOL in depth and melodies, but unlike where you can hear Maynard's voice, and TOOL has focus on intelligent lyrics, Isis is different.  While Isis does have a singer, the music isn't centered around the vocals or lyrics, unlike typical rock bands.  The singer's voice is either blurred in the music, or he's not singing.  In some cases it's... refreshing... it's different, and it makes the music sound better.  It's like they use the voice as an instrument... literally.

The music is very rhythmic and repetitive.  You may hear a few guitar strings that're repeated over a minute or two, and then slight changes to those notes as the song progresses.  But that's one of the things I kinda wished TOOL did every so often... focus on a particular note here or there.... a little more than they did in their songs.... because there was something about those notes that struck the soul.

Anyways, if you like TOOL, check out Isis, you won't be disappointed.

Yea, they are definitely worth checking out. Both Celestial and Panopticon are very good albums. Haven't listened to Absence of Truth though. Like Orcish said though, they are like Tool. They're progressive rock/metal. The vocals are more of growls but they blend into the song very smoothly and like she said, are just another layer of instruments.

Another album you should check out by them is Oceanic.

In Absence of Truth is definately worth the price I paid in iTMS.  Hell, it's worth a standard CD price in-store.  ... Honestly? I think it's better than Celestial, at least to me.

I just bought the album. I'm listening to the first song and wow it's incredibly good. Promises that the rest of the album is gonna be great. Thanks Orcish

I bought Oceanic from Isis a long time ago.. and never really listened to it cause.. the style of music really wasn't what I wanted to listen to when I bought it (I was still hooked to Panopticon and In the Absence of Truth) ... but I'm finally starting to listen to it ... it has a very Celestial-feel (Isis' first album) to it.. but still the same melodic Isis... and there's a female singer in some of the songs which is like.. a "wtf" reaction.. but... soothing to the ears ... and just adds to the music like the male counterpart ...

For your listening pleasure, I think you'll like the band Jesu as well.  Just saw them open for Coheed, reminded me a lot of Isis when I heard them.  Similarly, I would recommend Mastodon and Neurosis... if it weren't for Neurosis none of those bands would exist, and Mastodon is just fucking amazing in every way, I have no words for them.  They wrote an entire concept album about the book Moby Dick, the end of which is a 14-minute long song about drowning.  It's amazing, simply put.

Why, in all that is good and holy in music, would you go see Coheed? They fucking suck. I'll check out that band though. Mastadon, the little bit I've heard, is really good.

I get into almost any show I want for free.  And don't knock it till you've tried it; I was thoroughly impressed by their musicianship, even though I wasn't a fan of their CDs.
