I have just a fast question, sorry, I couldn't find the answer anywere...
I hope your not offended Ananth, but how do you pronounce your last name? I love alot of last names, and your just seems like it would sound awesome.

A friend of mine has the last name Chicharro (Chich R' ro' ) and it is by far the coolest one I have come across, but I think yours will easily be my second fav if it is how I think it is... (if that makes sense).

HAHAHA

I'm not offended in the least - truth be told, I wish people would ask more often. People always seem embarrassed about asking, but better to ask once and get it right than to never ask and botch their name to eternity.

It's pronounced "pan-guh-ree-ah". Panagariya. That second "a" is silent. People also say "pa-na-guh-ree-ah", and that doesn't bother me too much, although it's not totally accurate.

My first name isn't entirely phonetic either ... it's "a-nunth". No hard second A, which is what most people do (as in a-nAnth).

Something I posted elsewhere in the forum:

Quote
I had dozens of names in high school ... we had these monthly awards ceremonies at my elementary school. My principal called everyone's name to come up: so, every month, I had a different name. I had dozens of names. I was enigmatic and mysterious - changing identities every month can do that.

It happened in middle school and high school as well; in one class I got so fed up that I told the teacher to call me Joe - so I was Joe for a semester.

What about anyone else? Do you have an "unusual" name (and by unusual I suppose I mean that people screw it up a lot), and how do you pronounce it?

Oh, he's making that up ... he usually calls me "His Great Majestic Emperor under whom I am but a worm". HGMEUWIABAW for short. And no, I won't tell you how to pronounce that.

My name is not that hard to pronounce, well not for a Dane that is :P

However I do know a few people that encounter some of those problems. One, a girl named Shené, often has her name mispronounced by the teachers. A mispronunciation that would be somewhat equal to the word "inconvenience". Pretty hilarious. Apart from that, then the school made some typing errors when typing in the names of the students attending the school. And many students have suffered great humiliation and some of these names are still being used when addressing these people.

Everybody calls me Toine, which is short for Antoine.
It's a fairly unusual name (unless you live in Holland, which I don't), and so I get called all sorts of strange things... (not to mention how people spell it sometimes...)

I guess phonetically, it would be pronounced "twahn" to rhyme with "swan".

Prozac - what is your name?

Neither of my names are very difficult to pronounce, but spelling them is a whole other thing.
90 precent of the time, people write Schlumpen instead of Shlumpen, and they can never seem to spell Dahlke correctly (my last name)...

My last name is pronounced just like it's spelled, Gerstenberger.  But it's long enough to intimidate people and is often mispronounced.

My first name is Christian, however on all the scan-tron class sheets, there are only spaces for 7 letters, so I was always "Christia" to the teacher. First day, as always, they assumed it was a girls name, like Christina, or Christy or some other name like that. EVERY time I had a new teacher, I would always have to raise my hand when they called it, and tell them what my name really was. That sucked.

Okay....first and middle names are normal....last name is Zhukow. It's as Russian as it gets (my gramps on my dad's side was from Leningrad!) The name is pronounced "ZOO-KOH". If you want to get technical, it's pronounced "SHOO-KOV" (soften the "s" to get a more "z" sound and you have it!)  I have had SO many mispellings and mispronunciations I can't count them all...usually involved being called "ZOO-COW" a lot...not to mention getting nailed with the monniker of "commie" a lot....kids are really stupid sometimes..

Actually, my last name is shortened from its original...had something to do with my gramps trying to defect to Canada (failed twice, third time's the charm)...I have enough troubles with the name as it is...I can't imagine what it would be in its full length *shudders*

Red, awesome last name, dunno why but it is!  Cheesy

I don't have that problem, but my mom's maiden name is pretty harsh.  Masmitja (cuban) - pronounced Mahs-mee-ha.  My grandmother always had a pretty bad time with mispronounciations, like Mass-mee-cha.

Also, a family friend always had foreign exchange students, and one from Finland had a bad last name too.  No clue how its spelled, but I think I remember how its pronounced, just hard to break it down into the phoenetic (sp?) components.

Also, I'm guilty Ananth.  I thought it was pronounced like the common mispronounciatons you put in the post.

I have no idea why, but people have the hardest time with my last name, wich is " Climer "....just like Climber, but without the "B"....I get climmer alot...I mean alllot

But, it is not so bad if it is a person you just met, its when you have known the person for at least a week, that drives me nuts.

Also, I am in the 'dating process' with this girl named Moira.  Simple right?  M- oi (like the british word)- ra?  NO!.... More-ra     thats how it goes and for some aweful reason, I had the hardest time with that.   Guh...at least after I practiced saying her name before our first date, she noticed I said it right and was like "OMG you didn't butcher my name!"...   Revarien +5 points!
