Then again, Eve's secret might just have something to do with why she was so cheaply (and quickly) built.

I have a nitpick:

Everyone says that Hawk built Eve to be a robot girlfriend, but it really doesn't seem to be the case. Hawk refered to her as a 'Mac-girl' before she was built, and after she was built Hawk never refered to her as a girlfriend once. I think that Hawk decided to build Eve for a higher purpose than something as superficial as a girlfriend. He HAS installed some incredibly advanced systems; both hardware/software (her shields and her ability to rewrite her own code) and that not to mention her 'secret'.

While it's true that Hawk tried to program her to let him grope her, I think it was more a side-project for him. He IS obsessed with boobies  Wink .  He only tries that once, and he never flirts or tries to take advantage of her ever again.

nitpick over.

As for her secret, I think it might have been something that was right under our noses for a long time. Something that even Hawk didn't know about until she was built.

Eve can reprogram herself. Is she a seed AI?

Well, she learns, makes her own decisions and feel bad about hurting others. I think her secret is that Hawk accidentally made a living being without the use of a womb. He did program her, but most of her actions baffle him and "Don't make sense." She also has some fear of her own death, as hinted at here(having trouble finding a link to that particular page with the new layout...) on page 159, 'Learning.'

there's a lot i could reply to his about being totally logical.. but eh whatever.. don't feel like typing it.. i jut still think it is a little farfetched..

To which I quite confidently proclaim thus:

It is a web comic, that being, a graphic piece of fictional narrative which has posted on the internet for the viewing of the general populous.

Damn good graphic, fictional, narrative if I do say so myself... Grin

It doesn't take a lot of money to build a computer, at least, from spare and salvaged parts.  Just an excess of L33TN355.  One of my friends makes a living this way, building custom machines from flea market scrap and old frames.  They certainly aren't as pretty as Eve, but hey, they're cheap and fast, and if it's for a friend, he paints and draws on them.  They're like the old hotrods from the fifties, all power and spray paint and scrap metal.  So, if logic follows, because Hawk has skillz, it wouldn't be as expensive to build eve as it may seem.

umm can you ask your friend to build me a cheap and fast mac girl Smiley

I think he's tried.  At least once.  Think 'Weird Science', combined with drunken voodoo and a marathon of Clamp's Chobits, which I assure you made for a very odd night.

reason.  you talked about her not liking death, but what the page actuall suggests is her not liking the thought of no being around.. not being made.. hawk being stopped fromcreating her. she is confused about how you should stop someone when you know they are making choices you think are bad. and suc stuf like that. and as for her secret.. i really am starting to think its her AI.. the ability to be human like in a non human like form.

But why should she care if she's not around? Fear of death is the fear of no existing any more, the fear of not having an impact on the world. Caring about being around can be considered as a fear of death.

She seems to fear not existing as a whole. This would incompace Death as well. Not many people go "Well, i'm glad i was born, but now that I have been, you can kill me whenever."

That's the point I was trying to make. Thanks.

Come to think of it, she doesn't have human emotions per se, but she DOES have the basic drives behind them; like self-preservation, the desire to eliminate competitors and love.

So in a way, she's not human, but can be thought of as FUNDAMENTALLY human.

The concept of emergent behaviour is so cool.  Grin

You forgot grief and regret.

At the end of the day she simply hasn't learned all emotions yet or how to express them. In time she most likely will. She's a very intuitive robot.

i love that movie, almost the definition of the 80's, do keep me up to date if he ever succeeds though.

side note: this topic did get pretty deep, kinda scary that a real conversation can take place on any internet forums, one small step for AG, one giant leap for the interweb.
