Ok, so, I did everything in the user's guide (I actually read it all before even unpacking the sfuff), charged and filled the iPod Shuffle with music from my iTunes library. It actually plays the songs when it is connected to the computer, but once i disconnect it, turn it on, press the play button... it just won't play. Everything seems ok, the light is green and what not.

I still think I will ask for a replacement, but if there's anything I'm not quite getting, please tell me.

Sorry if this is going to sound a bit stupid, but yeah... well here goes:

When you disconnect the Shuffle from the computer, is it still switched off?

When you do switch it on, there are a few moments where it is unplayable. I just looked at mine and when I switch it on it takes around 6 seconds for the light to turn off, only after that it will play.

On a similar note, if it has been switched on, but left not playing for a while, it will go to sleep, so the first click of play will wake it up and the same 6 seconds are needed for it to become playable again.

I think on mine, if I'm not patient, and start pressing play loads of times it seems to remember that I pressed play loads of times and stay paused because it doesn't know which of the button presses to obey.

Maybe this didn't help at all, but when I first got my Shuffle it kicked up a few quirks that kinda took me by surprise, so i thought I'd pass them on. Maybe you have a dud iPod...

Well, i'm going to reinstall the software now... also i read something about "having the latest ipod updater", so i'll try that too.

Now i'm just wondering... does the first time you plug it up counts as charging? Because it probably didn't charge, when i pressed the battery button it didn't turn on... well, i'm charging right now... gonna wait the 4 hours, tho the light is already green... oh well. Be back later with news. =P

apple recommends you do the full charge but i never did that with my powerbook and it works just fine.

did you try formating and running the software? because if you did and it still doesn't work you need to send it in to apple.

Well, I did all the "r" stuff (reset, reinstall, restore, etc), and got the latest ipod update... i'm just waiting half an hour more for it to charge fully (tho, as i said, the light is already green) to load the songs and see if it works now.

Alright! I knew Apple wouldn't fail a first time buyer.

Seems like the battery had not charged well, so i left it another four hours and voilá, it's working.

  I did have the same problem. But full charging the battery dose not work with me. So i just replace it. You are right they never let down a first time buyer.
