Oh great; Ice is posting another "Should I buy duh-hur!" thread. Sorry...this one is urgent.

My computer's on the fringe. If you read the other threads I posted in the past you know that my main hard drive is starting to seize randomly (spinning to the beat of a 5.25" floppy drive....*shudder*) and my power supply went a while back, causing (I suspect) a lot of the problems lately. It did fry my scsi card, killed my cd burner, and might've done damage to my ram. my 200 gig WD ide drive is ok, but aside from that, this computer is a 4 year old mid-aged beast.

That said, and with the new price reductions by apple, should I look into one of the powerbooks now that I can get a 15" with the dual display option for 1800ish, or an ibook? I would be doing a lot of raw image editing in photoshop, but aside from that and itunes, I would just be browsing, email, and not much else. I was originally thinking of the mac mini, but I want portability, ease of use, and a bit more oomph. I checked and saw I could get a 14" iBook for around 1100 or so, but I don't quite know if that's got enough to handle editing good sized (IE: A Nikon D70's full res) raw image file.

And yes, I might sell off my gig of PC2700 ram, and maybe my computer as a barebones on ebay. I'd get an external housing for my 200 gig IDE drive and keep my external DVD writer.

Tis true.
I have a friend with a 1-model out iBook, and when he uses Photoshop, it slows down pretty stinking quick with larger images.

Go with the powerbook, and remember to get the Applecare.  The logic board on the iBook we have just died (today in fact), and Apple is replacing it free of charge.  In fact, we're getting a new iBook.

Best option is a 15" PB w/ a gig of ram and upgraded video card imho... (it's what I have/am writing this on... great for college and all that jazz : ) you could always just buy an extra stick of 512 from an apple ram place... since apple has a high mark up... but it's easier just to have it installed and know it will work when it shows up at your house.

My .02USD.

always nice to have another voice of opinion...

15 inch... yeah. definitely. i have the base model so the only think i can recommend you do is up your ram by a gig really... but it's cheaper to buy it from www.macsale.com or something. but you must get a 15 inch. the 12 is very portable but a pain on screen size. then again the 17 gets annoying if you do flash work...

If you can hold out at all, you may want to wait until January. The rumor is that the new iBooks with Intel's Yonah processor will be out. If you like being an early adopter and/or you are a brave soul, you could pick one up. They might even be faster than the powerbooks based on PPC.
