I bought a book called "The psychology of the gamer."


One chapter explores why gamers who win are assholes, and gamers who lose are bitches.
In a nutshell, it's a warped version of berzerker's syndrome. The player plays the game against a bunch of computer players or noobs, and when they finally come across a good gamer, they think it's just another easy win, but they feel cheated when they lose.
An illusion is shattered, and the longer the illusion has been biulding up, the more painful it is when it breaks. So naturally, the gamer feels the need to vent his anger against you for defeating him and shattering his illusion of grandeur.
It's a bit like the day you realise santa's not real, or the toothfairy's not real, or the first time a Jehova's witness rings on an Atheist's door....
They automatically assume that you cheated, or that something's wrong with the game. They make excuses, believing that something has to be wrong for them to be losing games.

The other occurance is that they beat you. They get all smug and say things like "Owned!" and such, which are really just the illusion being confirmed.

I could go into this more and explain about rejuvination of illusion, but I won't bore you.
I've already written more than enough.

Except when you play a game SO MUCH that you're tired of creaming guys and you want a challenge ... but those are SO few and far between that you'd be asking for a miracle to happen.

(Wintermaul Wars in Warcraft III.  .... No one challenges me.  Okay, so there's one person every so often that can beat me, but I still either beat him in income, or my team just sucked that bad.)

What about when you sworded from  across the battlefield in Halo 2? I've seen all kinds of crazyness in that game. Don't mind getting busted, happens to me most of the time in slayer (Witout a doubt, my worst event). That's why I only play territory and CTF these days. I don't have any illusions as to my personal level, Or anything like that, but when I start seing people teleport and junk, I smell a rat.

I  once got cornered by a kid at my school who I got 9 headshots on, sworded him 16, and gave him a mowhawk with a needler 2 times. I beat his ass in halo 2, and I beat his ass then.
 
I  once got banned from a guild on guild wars for asking to have a higher rank. I mean, I did design the wembsite tempelate for the guild's website... that has to count for something.
