Brief aside on the topic of consistency of success with Spybot/Ad-Aware...

Of course they're not always going to remove everything.  "Always" is a vastly general word, and largely implies some sort of exaggeration.  By running these two programs, one is not guaranteed a shqueaky clean compy.

It's like anything in life...gotta know how to tinker a little.  Every situation is different...there's rarely a  one-step fix-all for anything, especially concerning computer matters.  If Ad-Aware and Spybot were perfect qick-fixes, there wouldn't still be bunglers rampaging around forums whining about malware (not implying that any in this particular forum are bunglers and/or whining).

Hence why you should always format! Cheesy
Nothing like a good clean format to fix it all up. If you find it a hassle then you really can't do anything about it. You can defrag and run scan after scan but you're computer's going to be garbled up sooner or later (depending on what you do with it) so my advice to anybody who has ad's popping up like that format. I've had a friend who had the same thing and she ran Norton, Adaware, and Spybot to no avail. It still puzzles me but a format did the trick :p

Anyways I wanted to mention th Batman that his link to Spybot in his recent rant is just a link to applegeeks, so I thought I'd give him a heads up. Unless he planned it to be that. Or Applegeeks created Spybot....did you?!

Hey, I'd just like to point out to BatmanX:

I do IT work for a living, and currently, dafer-networking is having some problems with spybot. The version they have is an outdated one, and you cannot recieve the newest updates if you download from them. I do have a fix though:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

It has the most up-to-date version of spybot out there. I use that site's download of it, and I have put it on over 50 client PC's with no problems.

theres a ton of stuff out there that is used as removal tools but your best bets are : an up to date antivirus software, firewall, and updated operatining system.

for adware spyware and other mailcious codes adaware and spybot are great tools. if they are fully updated and run in safemode. but spybot isnt updated as frequently and has a dso exploit error. adaware also sometimes will not run with certain types of adware/virus on the pc. microsoft did release a beta antispyware software thats a great tool it not only fixes redirects (hijackings and about:blank) but lots of common spyware and adware issues. (it can sometimes corrupt the winsock tho but the fix is easy
if you run the software and get page cant be displayed follow this microsoft kb article 811259) the beta provides real time protection and an activly updated database whenever you block or remove an item found so the files are about as current as you can get and new issues are fixed faster. microsoft also released the malicious software removal tool (MRT)  which is downloadable on the microsoft site at kb article 890830. it is like a most wanted list of the most common infections and at present only detects and removes 10 issues but its updated everymonth and will grow with time

free viral tech support -> 1866 PC SAFETY

this is all i fix all day and this is what we at microsoft virus support use

Make love to Firefox for blocking pop-ups Smiley
Then stop uing IE, update on the offchance you may need to use it... Like... Your porn sites don't load or something in FF. Then try Opera, only then might you wish to click that infernal blue E, that screams "I'm stupid. Destroy me. Kplzthnx" (Note: No real distaste is held for IE uesers. Just IE). Firewall wise, I go with Agnitum Pro 2.0 (Paid for, of course). Anti-Virus I go down the path of AVG Pro (Again, paid for). Adaware and Spybot fill my need for spyware searching and destroying.. But none of this is relevant, because I;'ve not once had a problem with Applegeeks. Except the first time I saw Eve... Spazms galore.

There's some very good advice in this thread, & I know it's a bit old [the thread, I mean], but I thought I'd add my own advice.

Firstly, anyone using windows should go here & follow the instructions on modifying your HOSTS file. I won't try to explain it as that page does a better job of it than I could. Smiley

Secondly, if you want more security/features than IE but still want the look/feel of IE because you don't like Firefox, try Maxthon. It uses IE's engine [although there is the option to use the Gecko engine, which I *think* is from Firefox?], but has a whole heap of features/stuff that IE doesn't have but should. Again, it's site can tell you about it a lot better than I could, but suffice it to say that I don't ever see any particular advert [of *any* kind] more than once if I don't want to, & it blocks quite a lot by default already.

<offtopic>
BatmanX - nice job on migrating the forum to different software, I've seen quite a few that have managed to get borked completely whilst doing that, so kudos to you.

I wouldn't worry about that guy at all. He probably falls for the "you have new mail, click here" ads.

Firstly, anyone using windows should go here & follow the instructions on modifying your HOSTS file.
Thanks, this is awesome. Doing something system level is a lot better than installing some 3rd party app that uses more resources.
