avast is good
if you want simplicity, try out AVG free (AVG stands for Anti Virus by Grisoft)
the only thing about it, the free one is kinda hard to locate on the avg website

Avast! seconded. I especially like the UI redesign that came with version 5. I've used it in both the home and professional setting and have no major complaints.

For my Windows-using friends and family, I recently switched them from AVG to Avast.

AVG Free has a more complicated process for its required yearly re-installation, and one of their definition files falsely disabled an essential iTunes file (fixed later).
