Hi.

I'll get right to it, I'm wondering if my fan is dying. I have a first gen MacBook so its a bit older than 3 years.

Lately, the fan has made an annoying noise like buzzing or oscillating noise, that wasn't there before at all, and would go away for awhile, then come back and go away and come back in shorter amounts of time and now its there always. I'm not new to computers by any means and its way out of warranty anyway, so I opened it to see if there was anything that in its vast knowledge was thin enough to get stuck in the heatsink vent. After removing 3 years of dust, most of which probably came from a recent apartment that, I believe, was made of dust, I closed her up and everything ran around 20 degrees cooler but the fan still acted the same.

The fan is stuck roughly around 3400rpm and will not go faster. Even with the smcFanControl that lets me manually set the speed, I put it up to 6200rpm and it still idles around 3000-3400 rpm.

The computer still doesn't get overly hot, but for some reason when it reaches 190°f or so, it will drop my wireless connection (my ethernet port stopped working long ago, I have no idea why), causing any streaming video to stop loading and while playing WoW thats not a good thing.

Could it be just the fan or an issue with the fans controllers or what? It's just concerning me because I don't want to damage it and I can't really afford a new computer in any capacity..

Macbooks use magnetic levitation fans. Higher quality, quieter, but are more fragile when it comes to being knocked slightly out of alignment. Any Apple store or licensed 3rd party fixit shop should be able to recalibrate or replace it.

If you've been inside one before, or are mechanically savvy...  you can replace it yourself.
