I turned my laptop on today to find that the screen was still dimmed. after much fiddling i realised that it wasn't dim, it just wasn't on.  Tried plugging in a monitor to the laptop and still no luck.  The only thing I can think of is that some wiring has come loose in the computer.

My question is, does anyone know if it would be a big job to find that out, and whether it would be worth getting it looked at?  I got the laptop just before leopard came out, so it's fairly old now.

What do people think.

Mine did the same recently.

Ring Apple and if they get you to take out the battey, unplug the AC adapter, press the power button for 5-10 secs then reset the NV/P-RAM and that doesn't work your GPU is probably dead. (Symptoms sound the same as mine, luckily they'll fix it free of charge.)

What did they do to fix it?

Cause I just took it into be repaired. and the guy did that when I handed it over. I'm waiting for them to get back to me whether I get it under the warranty....

They replaced the whole logic board. NVidia have admitted that that particular line of chips with the same core as the 8600M GT are most likely all dodgy and prone to failure.

Had to get it sent back to AASP since they seated it wrong and the wireless card wasn't detected and the left hand side USB port didn't work.

Wow that sounds like a lot of problems... mine only had one usb port disappear every now and then.

Got it back, but in my stupidity I forgot to get them to check my DVD drive while it was in the shop, so now I will have to pay more money to get the DVD drive working again. Argh!

I didn't have to pay to send it back to the shop since it was within 90 days of them replacing the part. And the fault/s didn't occur till after they messed with it.

Did you get it done under warranty or not in the end?

At least you can see your desktop even if the DVD drive won't accept movies. ; )

All I can think of at the moment is to do the standard thing and do a 'Repair Disk Permissions', restart and see if that fixes it. You can also do the P/NV-RAM reset too I guess.
