Growing up

Last Friday afternoon, I tweeted something on twitter that surprised everyone. If you follow my tweets, then you already know what I’m talking about. If you don’t, well, you better grab some popcorn. This will also explain why there has been a lack of updates on the big comic as well.

For those of you in the know I work full time in Washington D.C as a graphic artist/developer for a small design studio. The work is mostly for the web, which I don’t mind since I have been doing web work since I was 15 years old. I’ve also have been working on Applegeeks since February of 2003. So for a while, I have been going to my full time job and then coming home to work on the comics.

Then around the end of 2009, I was offered to do some freelance work. The offer was to design a maquette from Joss Weadon’s Serenity/Firefly series. Now let me tell you, being a browncoat fan, that is something you do not turn down.

If you’re wondering, the company that contacted me is called Quantum Mechanix. They specialize in building replicas from movies and shows. They are professionals at what they do and very passionate about their work. Since then, I have been working for them as a freelancer.

A couple weeks ago, Big River Tam, maquette was released. Soon, Little River Tam and Little Wash will follow. Happily, it doesn’t stop there. I have been assigned to work on J.J Abram’s Star Trek movie maquettes and BBC’s Dr Who maquettes. The list goes on from there. Sadly the NDA (non-disclosure agreement) prohibits me from saying anything beyond that (but hey, that’s the fun of surprises right?).

Now you can imagine what the hours of my evenings went too. I was working daily in DC and coming home to work on my freelance projects. I thought I would be able to get the comic done as well but I realized I was overextending myself. Regardless of the work hours, I still wanted to keep Applegeeks going. My goals for my work (both personal and professional) have always hinged on enjoying what I do, and I believe this enriches the final product.

Summarily, working for QMx in the evening wasn’t cutting it anymore. Considering the amount of work that was coming in, it was impossible to do it in the time I was alloted after my day job. That is when I was given another opportunity and eagerly accepted it.

Soon I will be starting a new chapter in my life as a Senior Illustrator and will be working at QMx’s headquarters in Los Angeles. As you may know I was born in Washington D.C and grew up in Maryland but now I’m leaving the east to head west. Though I will miss the support and company of my family, I feel this is a right move for me.

Los Angeles is where my skills are taking me and I need to try it out. I am excited about the work I’m about to do over there and very pumped about sharing it with everyone when I can. I guarantee it will blow your mind.

Now you may be wondering as to the fate of Applegeeks. I still would like to finish drawing the current story arc. But due to my new obligations that might take some time. Once I’m settled in LA, I might gain some time in the evening again. All I ask from you is to hang in there and know the story will finish. Your loyalty is humbling and I will do my best to reward you all as fans and give the comic the ending it deserves. As for AG lites, they will continue update as normal. I know the lites have been getting mixed reviews lately. I’m cool with that and I completely understand, but as of right now that’s the extent of work my free time will allow.

I believe I covered everything. I would like to thank everyone who stood beside us over the years and I would like to thank everyone who supported me after the announcement last friday.

To the long time fans or to those who just stumbled in, I hope you stay tuned. Since I truly enjoy what I do, I definitely aim not to disappoint.

  1. Hey, I just wanted to say that I read a lot of web comics, alot of which just stop. I can really say that I totally understand real life. You guys provide us with entertainent and fun and ask for nothing in return. So to do us the curtisy of telling us that things are changing and stuff, I just wanted to tell you that that I fell like you are showing me, personally, a lot of respect and that means a lot. Thank you. Also a huge congradulations and I hope the best for you! The west coast is amazing, its where I grew up.

    With much respect,
    Andrew

  2. This is both to you Hawk and also Ananth,

Like some of the others I have been coming to the website daily for the past couple of years but have never spoken up. I have enjoyed watching you guys grow, Hawk in his artwork and how every once in a while you reinvent the quality, and Ananth in his story telling and punchlines in the lites. Hawk I have enjoyed your crazy links in your blogs, to weird web stuff, almost as much as everything else. I will continue to visit even for the lites. All I would ask is don’t be so final. If this doesn’t pay the bills and it’s just for fun then you don’t owe us anything including closure. I would rather have a panel every once in a while rather than never again. Like I said you don’t owe us anything, we don’t pay for a service, most of us come here just to live vicariously through your life, which has gotten quite awesome as of your last post. Live life, enjoy, and it just so happens you feel like throwing together a panel just for the hell of it, at least you know it’s still there. And I hope you enjoy Cali. I have lived here outside of Los Angeles all my life and I love it. Maybe we can meet sometime since you’ll be closer. Like I said it has been fun just to sit and watch through your window.

  3. Congrats Hawk, that is awesome news indeed. Good luck w/ real life and will look forward to anything new that is posted.

  4. Congratulations!!! Good luck, and here’s hoping you only need a little (after all, you both have tons of talent and ability). Thank you for telling us. Even, or maybe especially, us longtime lurkers appreciate knowing what’s going on. I for one have plenty of patience.
I just hope to someday make it to a convention to meet you guys, and finally support you financially. Knock ’em dead in all you do. We’ll be cheering you on.

  5. Just wanted to congratulate you on the news and to wish you luck with your endeavors. Its been a pleasure to read Applegeeks over the years and am glad it lead to such an opportunity.

  6. Congratulations Hawk! Long time fan, never posted before but wanted to add to the list of well-wishers. It sounds like you’ll be doing fantastic for a long time to come!

  7. Three cheers for our hero Hawk for this is not the end
first Apple-geeks then, the world Kukuku!!!

  8. Thank you and congratulations Hawk, you are an inspiration. Not just in the US but for a lot of people in the EU as well. Hope you will continue doing some form of AG for as long as possible! Us Dutch artists salute you ^^

  9. Ouaou. That seems so exciting. I wish you the best of the best.
And I am sure that all the readers can wait patiently for any sort of continue in the comic.
And more news of your career of course ;).
    WTG!

  10. Congratulations. Good things happen to good people. Talent needs to be challenged, to grow, to bloom. Imagine what tomorrow will bring.

  11. Congratulations, man! This sounds like an amazing opportunity, and I wish you all the best.

As for the comic, all good things must eventually come to an end. I’ve been reading for a good 5-6 years (I never even realized it had been that long until I thought about it!), through some good ups and downs, and just… yeah. I’m glad to hear you’ll end it the way you think it should end.

    Anyways, good luck.

  12. That’s amazing news.. I know what it’s like to suddenly uproot yourself for something you love to do and it’s totally worth it in the long run.

I’ve been reading AG since near the beginning and even though I am not a primarily Apple user, the geek in me has loved every bit. I have enjoyed the new art directions and stories.

    Again, congratulations! And good luck!

  13. Congrats on the new job! and the Big River Tam looks awesome!
been following from the get go and loving your comic, you’ve definitely got the skills to go far! Take your time, us long time fans know you won’t abandon us without a good bye :D
Best of luck with the new job!

  14. I can’t really describe how much I’m gonna miss Applegeeks, its been a constant for me for years and I’m gonna miss it tremendously. That being said though you have such an incredible talent and I can’t wait to see where life and your abilities take you. All the best Hawk.

  15. Congrats man, you have been given a major oppertunity to get furthur ahead in life and you my all rights should take it. I have been a long time reader and I will be very sad to see it go but you have to do what you have to do. If anyone has anything negative to say about you pushing your career to new highs then to hell with them. Follow what you want to do, not what others what of you. It would be nice in a later time, once you get settled in of course, when you do some kind of art or project without some kind of NDA if you would still post it some how. I love your art and hope to see more down the road. I wish you the best and god speed.

  16. Congratulations on living the dream and being able to use your talents for the benefit of…. Cheese! Anyway, I’ve followed applevgeeks since the beginning and the big color comics will be missed.

I can’t wait to see your other work!

  17. Heh nice to see someone getting out of Maryland to move onto bigger and better things, being a fellow Marylander I know what it’s like to wanna stay close to family.
Well can’t wait for the continuation of Applegeeks and hope you’re able to continue this. Godspeed Hawk and enjoy the west coast life

  18. Sounds like a fantastic job, a great opportunity. You deserve it, both the job and a fat paycheck. You have a lot of talent, and, more importantly, a lot of hard earned skill. I like apple geeks, but all things end. I’d much rather know you are off doing something you love with your artistic skill and talent than continuing apple geeks while you are stuck doing something less.
Congratulations, Hawk, and thank you for all the art you’ve shared gratis for so long.

  19. Congratulations. You have been able to find something you enjoy in life, and are amazing at. While it is always a little sad to wait for comic updates, it’s good to know that it is for a wonderful reason. Go forth, young man, and prosper.

  20. I don’t post often, and have enjoyed reading AG since I discovered it. Congratulations on your advancement, and I understand growing up. It’s something none of us want to do, but somehow is a necessity. Best wishes, keep up the wonderful work, and look forward to QMx goodies!

  21. I’m not being a dick; you obviously don’t know who the “In Before X” trope works. To prove I’m not a dick, I will gladly explain:

In a given situation, such as Hawk ending AG to pursue his career, it can be assumed that some person will ultimately posit an inflammatory/charged statement X is applicable. Here, the statement is that Hawk has sold out. As time passes, the odds of X being posted to the discussion of said situation approach infinity, thus the likely hood of being able to contribute to the original topic approaches zero.

One who has nothing to add, such as myself, as Hawk is an artist and far be it from me to tell him how to employ his talents when I am not a paying client, and certainly do not feel that discontinuing a free web comic to pursue a career is “selling out”, i simply pointed out that i was able to post before the thread was completely derailed. just sayin’.

  22. Dude, i have been an applgeeks reader for a loong time, i was drawn to this site after it was mentioned in megatokyo and have read (and bought) the story ever since 2004.
This is the first time ive ever posted on here but i would like to say – Your site has been my homepage for a least 4 years and will continue to be for as long as you update it. I have always found a kind of childlike innocence behind the story, or rather an honest straight to the point kind of humour that while not based in real life is based (on some level) on the morals and personality of the people involved, while its unusual to say so i feel like i almost know a part of each person because of how they are portrayed in the story. In a way I almost envy the friendship of youreself and Ananth as i infact miss the days of having friends that close.
Applegeeks has become part of my daily routine, i check here, megatokyo and deviantart before i do anything on my pc and i guess what i would like to say is thankyou. All good things come to an end and while it is not the end yet if work does not allow you time in the future i would ask you to feel no guilt as in truth it is the fans who are in your debt for the amount of entertainment and happiness you have brought into our lives.
You have given your services freely and we have avidly watched everything you have made, for that i on the behalf of the fans of Applegeeks am grateful. Not only this I would like to also (as many others) congratulate you on your success and wish that i could hold my name up to half of your achievements.
I know its unlikely for you to read this, but even if you skim read it – congratulations, good luck, godspeed and thankyou once again.
Also my regards to Ananth, he too has been an unmissable part of such a great gift.

  23. Just another fan from the begining, thank you for the webcomic. Its one of the few I’ve followed since the heady days of the early 00’s and one of the main ones that have shaped my career into art. Thank you for all the inspiration!

  24. Dude, you are made of awesome. The main story is cool, but AG Lite is my delicious filler. I like the newspaper comic feel. Thanks for putting your job before what you do for fun.

    Keep being awesome.
    -Sky

  25. Well Congratulations! I have been a long time reader and will be very sad the day the story ends for Applegeeks. To watch your art mature and Ananth’s writing skills develop over the years has helped me get through the monotony of a boring desk job.

You two will be missed :-(

  26. This is a well deserved upgrade for you, Hawk, I’ve been a crazy fan of yours since day one. I’m so glad you’re getting the recognition you deserve. I just hope you’ll keep updating Hawk Studios. Your art will always inspire me.

  27. Congratulations! Nice to see your moving up. Good luck in the west. I’ll be looking forward to new updates.
    Your work is inspiring. Thanks

  28. Good sir – I have followed your wonderful comic since my college days in DC and it has been a true pleasure watching you grow. Applegeeks highlights what marvelous outcomes are possible when two friends work together creatively. Penny-Arcade is another example and it’s been such a fun ride watching the growth of talent. Also just saw that the River Tam is QMx’s best selling statue – many congrats. It’s understandable that this site became just AGlite, but hope the Ramadan comics don’t completely fade away. Nothing makes fasting more endurable than laughter =D
All the best with your future endeavors the quality of your work is fantastic.

  29. Thank you so much for the wonderful work you’ve contributed to the webcomic world. I’ve been a fan and avid reader for years, and it’s sad to hear about the end approaching. Congrats on the position in LA! I’m sure you’ll enjoy your time on the west coast, it’s always crazy here. Keep up your amazing work.

  30. w00t! NICE! Way to make your hobby your job! :) I can only say good luck and thanks for all the comics, even if they were about a guy who likes ‘the other team’. ;) Still, if you ever do an Enterprise D maquette, feel free to let me know. ^_^

  31. Oh is that what it is? Well, hot damn, CONGRATULATIONS!! I look forward to seeing your professional work (and hopefully I will be able to purchase them)!!

  32. Congratulations on getting the great opportunity Hawk, it’s obvious you worked very hard to earn it. I’ve been a fan of Applegeeks for years and met my best friend as a result of reading it. Believe it or not your comic changed my life and it has always been a joy to read. I look forward to seeing what you do in the future and will always remain an AppleGeek.

  33. Congratulations!!!! ^^ I don’t come by the forums, or comment much on the page, but I’ve been a fan since your early humble beginnings. I totally appreciate what you and Ananth put together here on applegeeks.com. I also, completely understand what it’s like to have a steady work life and do commissioned work afterhours, all the while waiting for the appropriate time to do what I’m passionate about as well as hobbies. Thank You for all the great comics and the stories. Can’t wait to see the rest and looking forward to see some more of our incredible work over at QMx! ^^ Much blessings and good fortune to you.

  34. I’ve been reading the site since … well since forever i can’t remember when.. but all good things must come to an end.. I just figured it would later then sooner.. You and the AG comics.. have lifted me on my darkest of days.. AG will be missed when it finally ends.. But till then i will look forward, eagerly, to every new comic.. every new snippets of life that light up my days.. Thank you..and even in that thanks.. or all the thanks in the world… will still not match all the effort…the smiles..the light that you bring into our lives..
