Yup, it’s that time again. A whole month of reflecting, appreciating and discipline. Here is a quick run down of how each day will be, if you’re wondering or interested.
I will wake up before sunrise to eat a meal. Either go back to sleep or get on the computer until it is time to head to work. I won’t be able to eat or drink after sunrise. I can eat again after sunset. The day ends with me going to the mosque for the last evening prayer and I come back home, which ends up being really late.
There you have it, pretty simple.

Ramadan Kareem bro!
I’m there with ya on the other side of the globe; we started a day ahead of USA from what I gathered.
The first day is easy for me.. usually the pangs hit around the 4th or 5th day.
Here in the Philippines sunrise is at 5:40 so we were spared from super early mornings.
Take care akhee and keep the faith!
Ma’salaam
hmm I wonder if I should fast, I’m not a Muslim but I bet its a cleansing experience I’ll see if I can do it
I’m not sure about the cleansing experience. All I remember is headaches and concentrating on what I would want to cook and eat. Maybe that’s just me.
Gonna give this a go! Help support my favourite comic dude!
Good luck! I am motivating another friend through Ramadan this year… she didn’t make it through last year.
…I honestly wouldn’t be able to handle fasting myself. I have a high metabolism so everything I eat, which is obscene in its quantity, gets converted right into energy. If I followed Ramadan, I would get very skinny very quickly.
Same here.
Ramadan Kareem mubarak!
I’ve been reading you comic for a long time now, and I may not share your religion (I’m Catholic/Vampiric) but when you go through it, I do it too just to see what it’s like, and I have this to say….it’s a great diet plan…anyways, keep the comic rollin!
Been reading your comic for a while now, gotta say i love it. good luck with your fasting. i can’t remember how long ramadan lasts but last year i did the same concept for 30 days, kinda inspired by your strips about it. it was quite a experience, although i’m pentecostal and it was well worth it.
Looking forward to seeing the squirrel again, in whatever capacity – his nut-fixated buddies will be all over Keele University this weekend when the UK anime scene hooks up for AmeCon!
Happy Ramadan! I’ve decided to fast with a group of my friends. They celebrate Islam, but I’m an agnostic, we thought it’d be cool for me to take part. Have a good month!
Me, I take too much pleasure in the earthly world and its wonders to give up eating for even a day. But I have the greatest respect for those who choose to forsake such mundane things in pursuit of the spiritual. Party on, brothers and sisters.
Another longtime reader here, wishing all who are fasting (for whatever reason)have the strength to go through with it. I find it hard enough to remember not to eat meat on Fridays in Lent and Advent, so I’m always impressed by your willpower! And Hawk, you always manage to come up with really funny comics on the topic, and great insights too. Keep strong and remember its all worth it.
I’m curious.. if one who observes Ramadan were a hypoglycemic and were to start getting those weak and shaky feelings in the middle of the day, would that person be allowed to eat something cus their health requires it, or would they have to suffer through it till night… well if they don’t pass out first? I can only imagine going all day without food O_o
To answer Leslie’s question, if fasting will cause you harm due to medical conditions or such, then you are not required to fast. If you can fast, but sometimes you may experience trouble, such as if you are hypoglycemic and are having some form of episode, then it is completely acceptable to break your fast. You are however generally required to make that fast up once Ramadan is over.
You can absolve yourself if a medical condition prevents fasting by feeding a person for 30 days.
Others have said that this also means feeding 30 people for one day.
It’s easier than it sounds.
Good luck dude, never fasted for more than 24hours, so I hope you have a better constatution than me =)
You’ve inspired me to observe the fasting aspect of Ramadan, as well. Three days in, I am hungrily awaiting sunset, and realizing that fasting is a very noble self-discipline.
So we’re in for another period of “Hawk gets taunted by food” AG lites? Excellent!
Being in a muslim country during Ramadan is an interesting experience. Most folks would probably be disappointed because a lot of activity slows down, but there’s calmness in the atmosphere (especially at sunset when everybody rushes home for dinner) that you don’t see any other time.
Can you eat whatever you want after sunset or is there stuff you have to avoid?
I do not know the correct expression; but may you have a good fast, a blessed Ramadan, and a joyful Eid.
be careful with water lose as it’s around 14 hours and hot summer.
Me (tha Christian) and My friends (the 2 Muslims) have had a longtime feud going back and forth about whos fast is harder,as my Non-Denom church holds a fast the first 2 weeks of July where you dont consume ANYTHING except water ALL day,24 hrs a day.We both agree however that it seems Food Network is all thats on TV. ><
