Please read: Change of pace

I’m going to assume most of you already heard the big news that was posted by Ananth. We are indeed going to back to a once a week schedule. Now, this only applies to the big comic. The AG Lites will still be updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The big comic will only be updated every Monday. Due to the update change, I moved the AG Lite above the big comic since it will be updated more frequently.

Now to answer the question…why?

Well, after drawing, inking, and coloring the comics for about 6 years, I realized I haven’t done a lot for myself. As you know, I work full time at a design studio. I’m learning a lot from my job and I love it. We are picking up work that challenges me to learn something new or push my skills even further. So when I come home, I am pumped with creativity. However I have very little time to accomplish anything for myself. It is a constant battle between creating something for myself and trying to get the comic updated on time.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t find doing AG comics a burden, not at all. The problem is, I find myself swimming in a pool of creativity. I like to mess with digital art, photography, video, and programming. By doing the AG comic once a week, I believe I can accomplish what I would like to do on my spare time.

Now here is the best part, you guys win as well. If you like my art, you’re going to see a lot more. I recently finished a matte painting for a client at work, now I want to do more matte paintings. If you like my photography, you’re going to see a lot more of that as well. I’m also learning AfterEffects, so it will be interesting to see what videos I produce. All of this will be posted on my personal site and I will tweet about it.

Lastly, I would also like to be able to just come home and relax. Where I can just sit back, watch a movie or play some games without worry about comic deadlines.

I think that covers most of it and I hope you understand. If you do…

  1. Yes! I like seeing what you create outside of the comic art-wise just as much as the comic, so win-win!

  2. I completely understand where you’re coming from, Hawk. I tried making a webcomic myself once, but I’d never do it on time, and it was a burden to me, so I stopped, whereas after several years you’re still going; I give you props for that. You deserve a creative break, and I wholeheartedly agree with your idea. I enjoy seeing your artwork just as much as I enjoy seeing the comic.

  3. change of pace is well needed to keep content meaningful. My only question is if you dont mind my asking what do you actually do? I’m looking to push myself as well in terms of creation and find a job that I would enjoy so if you could find the time to enlighten me I would greatly appreciate it.

  4. Just out of curiousity, does this affect The Watsons Comic as well, admittedly it didn’t have the strict update schedule that AG has, but just wondering if it was going to be affected as well?

  5. You’ve worked your ass off on AG for 6 years and now you want some time to do something for you. I can so relate. I for one look forward to seeing what you’ll produce with the extra time for creativity. Go for it!

  6. Hey, this is great news. Some might be bummed about fewer updates, however, in challenging yourself as an artist in whatever area, you will pick up things and that in turn with better the art of the comic (Note: I love the comic’s art currently).

So do what feels right for you and I look forward to seeing what else you are capable of.

  7. It’s cool, man. You do what you gotta do, and chillaxing is always something you gotta do. There must be time for the chillaxing. If this change brings about some chillaxing in your life, it’s fine by me. 8D

  8. I expect you will get some complaints. I would also bet that for every complaint you get, you have 9 more people happy that you are still turning arts out at the exceptionally high quality that you do.

Just remember, when you see those emails, that in the grand scheme of things, the people with the angry emails are getting tea bagged by Boomers in L4D by the 9 people that truly appreciate your gifts with the comic.

  9. It seemed like you were heading in that direction anyway, so it’s nice to have it be official.

In any case I think I enjoy seeing your work outside the comic even more, so no complaints from me if this means you start updating your Flickr and/or portfolio more.

  10. Good on you :) I consider this a win win situation, and boo to anyone who doesn’t support you. Congrats on having the courage to create time and space to push yourself- one day you’ll reach so high you’ll probably leave the solar system :p

  11. I do not comprehend. no joke. i you shouldn’t be worried. your a non subscription site so you should do things at your own pace. enjoy your free time while it lasts. somethign will come up.

  12. It’s totally understandable Hawk. And I would definitely like to see what you come up with After Effects. Who knows, something that will promote Applegeeks even further. :) Enjoy your time in creativity and with your friends, you do deserve it!

  13. I’m really glad you are taking time for yourself. Number one, you don’t want to burn yourself out. Also, your other work is always great to check out. I’m a Digital Arts student, so I love seeing all the stuff you turn out. It’s always an inspiration to me.

  14. It’s hard to keep any sort of personal project going when you leave school. For the longest time, all I had time for was work, and then I was suddenly married and helping to raise a very cute baby girl. My time in the evenings is very short, and I’m thankful if I get a couple of hours WEEK to devote to personal projects!

You’re doing the right thing, Hawk, although given the most recent trend, I wonder if you should update as regular as once a week? I would be betting that once every two weeks or even every four weeks would be more ideal given the fact that both you guys are increasingly more involved in other things.

  15. Good call, Hawk.

Having AG updated once a week will be better for the reader. The comic won’t be rushed, you and Ananth will be happy since you won’t have to ‘force’ ideas to develop due to deadlines, and we may see some positive shifts in your art here and there.

    Enjoy the freedom.

  16. the moleskin posts have been awesome, and everything you make outside of this is great to keep up with, you, and a few other artists are the ones i mainly keep up with and its nice to see what you do outside of your comics, your very creative and have a drive to push that creativity… and its nice to see where it goes. always a pleasure to see what you come out with next.

  17. Yo Hawk, you do what you got to do man. The real fans will stick around for it and the fair weather fans will let it slack for a time only to come back later realize they were schmucks. I look forward to seeing more of your non Apple Geeks work, as well as seeing how the comic progresses. Continue having good luck out there in the real world man.

  18. This is probably my favorite blog post you´ve done. I love the videos you´ve posted for us to see, and I´m actually happier that you´re going in this direction than if you were just putting all you got in the comic. After reading this comic for years, us other artists have enjoyed seeing you play with different styles even with the same characters. This is just a macrocosm of that–you´re playing with different styles, and we love to see it, honest. Comics are great, but they´re only one form and one medium really. I think I read applegeeks and Johnny Wander not so much for the comics anyway, but because I look up to you guys and want to see what you´re up to. Remember that whatever you do, in all the mediums you do it in, is a creative output that probably inspires someone else.

  19. We love you Hawk. Please take care of yourself and don’t lose sight of what’s important to you. ^_^;; Hugs are forthcoming…still.

  21. Dude, Hawk. Yes. Be a regular happy person, and worry not. The collective following will not eat your face; your well-being comes before the RSS feed. Way, way before.

  22. Hawk, I understand and look forward to the weekly update :) I always liked the AG Lites a lot also! Good to see those three times a week.

The real world bit me several years ago also … sigh :\

  23. This goes at both you and The Hat (Ananth). I completely understand. Hell, whenever I see messages like this I get confused. Here’s why…

You owe us nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. The fact that you continue to update, and with such awesome content, and more importantly with some much personal effort and emotion behind it, is amazing. You don’t have to do this. At the same time, we’re not paying you to. So, you do not have any obligation to update or do whatever, save a possible guilty conscience for “leaving us behind”.

Don’t ever forget that you’re the one sharing with us, not us sharing our viewership. Take your time, try new things (I’m looking forward to more photography; it rocks, and I love the little appearances mini-Hawk makes sometimes), and simply relax, breathe and take time off from everything if you really have to.

Once again, thanks for sharing with us, and take care of yourselves, and don’t EVER feel forced to do anything AG related. It’s awesome if you do, but I’d rather less frequent updates that are still 120% awesome than Mon/Thur never-miss-an-update updates that slowly die in quality and spirit over a several year process.

    Take care and be safe,

    Shinji16 / Brendan

  24. I’ve always believed the fans are the base of anything…like customers are for business. However, for those that have a passion for art, not just drawing, everything…music, writing, etc…things are a bit different. When you do them because you have a passion for what you love, people begin to admire it, even idolize it at times.(Hence the derivative of fan from fanatic.) The problem that can arise sometimes, is they might forget that there’s more to these people than just what they do right in front of you.

Things like this can help some to realize that, you have a life outside of what you currently do. And that there are other things you’d love to do, and show the world, but haven’t really had enough time to. And I feel when you stand up and are honest with your fans, they can be swayed by the power of your art, and want to see more of what you want to show the world, even if it’s not what you’ve normally shown.

Art comes from passion, passion comes from the heart. Live for what you do, and hopefully, love what you do. Keep up the good work you guys, because you have many, many loyal fans who will always love your art!

  25. dude, your stuff is awesome, you deserve more time for yourself just by giving us this great comic for free!

  26. Great!
oh love this weeks comic! how eve reacts to the girl being an artist is how i react to almost anything

  27. take your time, look after yourself, and let your creativity run where it wants to go.. i’ll just sit back and enjoy the results, heehee ^_^ i love your art, in all its expressions, so i’m looking forward to seeing what comes from a more relaxed and happy Hawk!

  28. Hawk ive been reading AG for years, and you are an amazing artist. And i along with most the people responding to this agree that your goals and dreams are yours. Hell i would wait 2 weeks for a comic just to get one of yours. Keep up the pace man, and have fun with your other projects

  29. Considering how much effort both you and Ananth put in to AG, the cons you go to and getting the books published, I don’t blame you one iota!!
The fact that you are still producing AG every week after 6 years is an enviable accomplishment as it is, so I for one will be just more excited when each new comic comes out!
Enjoy the free time and I hope it helps both of you out a lot :)

  30. I was going to say ‘it’s ok as long as you post more art’, but you’ve already made it clear that you plan to. The last time I visited it was still rather empty – I look forward to reading all the updates I’ve missed! The sky is the limit Mr Haque. All the best.

  31. I love how you make the comic a deadline to all your fans. It’s very touching to know that you value us so much that you take so much time from yourself to do this for us. I’ve been a follower for a good 4-5 years now and I’m really glad you are still around. I love to see how the comic has grown in style and character. Please keep up the good work and I will always be your fan~! <3

  32. We don’t watch you justfor the comic, you know. I personally find it pretty interesting to see you develop your own work in other ways, so go for it |D

  33. I must say, I really really like your art. You really do inspire me to take up Digital Art.

I’d say go for it. Do whatever you think it is right. Go create something for yourself. Don’t let anything stop you from gaining new skills and improving your skills to a new level.

I have this little saying of my own, “If we’re given a chance to gain new skills and improvements, take it up and let nothing stops you.”

I wish you good luck. :)

  34. Being back in school to finish my graphic arts degree and dealing with recent family deaths and the aftershocks of that, I absolutely understand not having time to spend on oneself. Thanks for giving us all a heads-up, Hawk.
