I’m sure most of you follow Penny Arcade and agree that their latest work is killer. Since I have become a huge fan of Automata, I decided to thank Tycho and Gabe for putting out excellent work by creating an automata pinup for them.

Here is a somewhat start to finish process…

I tried to keep it true to Gabe’s artstyle. At the end I was pretty happy with the end result.

It truly looks fantastic! I’m very happy to have seen Automata made. It immediately evokes the best parts of Asimov and makes it their own.

I was very excited about the Automata series; I’ve wanted to buy swag of it since they did the initial trial run. If you and the PA boys released this as a print, it’d be framed and on my wall within the week.

Are the Penny Arcade guys going to spin Automata off into its own series/webcomic or are they only hosting it on a limited run bases.

Okay. To satisfy my curiosity, I went over to PA and read the seven pages I could find. All I have to say is:

Wow. I love it!

i’m curious, how are you creating the background affects in that poster art? do you use alcohol on watercolor? i really like the style of background of your comics lately and have been wondering how it’s done. thanks for your time.

Great pin-up. I had been thinking it would be phenomenal if you could do the art on a larger Automata project, as the folks at Penny Arcade have said they really don’t have the time. They outsourced their Lookouts run on the website, maybe this is a partnership waiting to happen. It is my belief that a comic series or full size trade book of Automata would really rake it in.

I would hands-down buy the poster version, if you ever made it. However, I did have a request – for all us mac users out there with icons on the right side of the screen, would it be possible (without too much work) to provide a version with the background flipped? In other words, with the figures on the left instead of the right. I’d flip it myself, but then the text would be backwards.

Anyway I would normally never pester you for something like this, but the site is called AppleGeeks after all…

Any chance of a 1920×1200 version? Upscaling it makes it look a little fuzzy, cutting into the sheer awesome.

Hey there. I was wondering, in the finished piece at http://www.hawkstudios.net/temp/automata_process.jpg (Box 3 or the the right most box,) could be turned into a sticker? Something that I could slap onto my laptop. Perhaps I am not alone in desiring this?

That is amazing work Hawk! I’m a big fan of Automata as well.

In case you haven’t heard it, Christoph Hermiteer, a fellow Automata fan created a soundtrack that was inspired by the first comic.

Wow Hawk. That is really a very nice piece of work you did. I’m a fan of Automata as well. Is there any chance for a full HD or a 1920 by 1200 size for the wallpaper. Hopefully I’m not asking too much.
