It got hot as hell in DC today! Anyone have any good hot-day recipes for lemonade or ice-tea or anything like that?

Absolutely. I make mine a little more tart than this, but it’s a good startng point for delicious experimentation.

Here’s a lemonade recipe i remember from culinary school
1 part lemon juice (fresh always preferred)
4 parts water
1 part simple syrup (heat equal quantities of water & sugar together til sugar dissolves)
the “parts” can be cups, quarts, basically however much or little you want to make, and of course you can add more lemon juice & sweet stuff to suit your taste.
blending up strawberries and adding it to make strawberry lemonade is my personal favorite.
Love the comic, keep up the good work!

Sounds like it’d be good with some sparkling water instead of regular water too.

I do a similar recipe for friends (including the strawberries), but I also like to add a handful of fresh crushed or blended peppermint leaves. It has an odd color, but tastes fantastic. Sometimes I cheat and use frozen lemonade if I’m feeling lazy.
This recipe was great during the latest Northwest heatwave.

How did you guys forget the vodka? Alcohol dilates the blood vessels allowing you to radiate heat more efficiently. More alcohol=more heat transfer. It’s scientific!

You must have very little experience with intoxication to believe that it can help you cool off…

Ginger limeade is my summer staple. Make strong ginger tea, add sugar and lime juice, and chill. Good mixer for adult beverages too!

Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus Flower Water)

Dried hibiscus flowers, known in Mexico as jamaica (pronounced hah-MIKE-ah) are used to make this refreshing, delicious drink. Agua de Jamaica is a mild, natural diuretic. People who drink it for that reason often use a sugar substitute. This recipe takes takes about an hour to prepare and another hour or so to chill. It makes a half gallon. Or, if you’d rather buy a quick and easy mix for Agua de Jamaica

2 cups dried hibiscus flowers(2 packages)
2 quarts water
3/4 cup sugar (or to taste) – or equivalent amount of sugar substitute

Rinse and drain the hibiscus flowers in a colander. In medium saucepan, bring one quart of water to a boil. Add hibiscus flowers and sugar. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for approximately 15 minutes. Mixture will be dark red in color.

You can also add some diced fruit (watermelon, strawberries, etc) to give it some additional zing. Be very careful not to spill it on clothes as it will stain. a lot.

You can also find various aqua fresca recipes all over “teh interwebz”.

Cordially,

Eric

I make mine with some lime juice too: after you drain it, add some lime rings that you squeeze into your pitcher first. I like mine pretty tart, so just a squeeze of agave nectar with the lime juice.

Well just put some ice into a blender and add your favourite drink, after a bit of blending you will have a nice flavoured snow.

Stay indoors, shade is the life-saver.

Swim if possible.

Super easy spin off of an old family recipe.

~ 3-4 quarts of water
1 can of frozen concentrate lemonade
1/3 can of frozen concentrate limeade
1/4 can of frozen concentrate OJ
Splash of vanilla extract (the good stuff makes a difference)
Sugar to taste (usually doesn’t need much)
Optional: A shot of vodka or muddled with some mint and your choice of burbon or some Contreau.

Serve chilled over ice.

Take some Tonic Water. Pour it over a tall glass of ice. Squeeze a Lemon, add the Lemon Juice to the Tonic Water. Add a little Sugar to taste, or some Gin. Add a straw and lemon wedge. Complete.

Frozen Lemonade Pie

1 Premade Graham Cracker Pie Crust
1 14oz can of Sweetened Condensed Milk
1 6oz can of Frozen Lemonade (any flavor)
1 12oz container of cool whip

Set the can of frozen lemonade out for a few minutes so it gets slightly melted. Mix in a bowl with the condensed milk and cool whip. You want it to folded together, not mixed into a soup, so it still remains kind of fluffy and creamy. Pour into the pie crust and stick in the freezer overnight. Then take it out and serve.

There are so many things you can do to change it too. If you want strawberry, use strawberry lemonade or pick a different flavor. If you want it to be more tart and sour, add an extra can of lemonade. Although if you do add a can, it is probably best to get a 2nd pie crust and mix in 3 different types of frozen lemonade. It is very good.

Iced Jasmine tea can be amazingly cooling; it’s my favourite during the dry seasons in Malaysia.

Just brew plain Jasmine tea, sweeten with honey, leave to chill a while and drink iced. Simple and effective. If all else fails: find a lawn with a good water sprinkler.

We got a heat wave too, and I happened to be having friends over for tea. Hot tea would not go with that weather, so I made iced tea instead. Take your preferred tea (I use loose-leaf green or oolong) and put in twice as much tea as you would normally for the portion you’re making (I do ~3 tbsps for a liter). Use half as much boiling water (so you’re ending up with half a container of double strength tea) and steep for about 5 minutes. Then add cold water to fill the rest and you’ve got a full container of regular strength, lukewarm tea. Add ice cubes or put it in the fridge/freezer for a bit. It’s better if you can do it the day before but that heat wave came out of nowhere and it works in a jiffy.

I use Country Time lemonade mix with a cup of lemon juice for that extra twist-your-face-up tartness. Man, that hits the spot.

Personally, I prefer limeade, take any lemonade recipe and swap out for limes, or do 1/3 lemons, 2/3 limes. Though Iced mugi-cha(barley) tea is AMAZING for hot weather. You can get it at a japanese or chinese supermarket if they have those there.

Here’s something I wish I had the luxury to drink now but have to go work in the heat as well..refreshing and “ice tea like” :3

In a medium glass take some ice, drop about a shot or two of puerto rico rum on the ice, do a splash of coke just to colour it and then add a shots worth of lemon or lime juice. add one wedge of lime
