GUYS! I spent an hour this morning looking at old 80s cartoon openings (spurred on by Twitter brethren). I got some pretty fantastic ones, including Bionic 6 (the asian guy knows karate and the black guy is super strong … the 80s were pretty awkward basically all of the time) and Silverhawks. I think my favorite part of the Silverhawks intro is when the one guy is in the cockpit of his starfighter, totally wailing on his guitar.
And then, of course, someone introduced me to the absolutely bizarre Dinosaucers.
So – what 80s intros can you dig up? Post them in the comments, join in the nostalgia trip! I am totally going to put on my LA Lights and ride away on my kick scooter now, see ya!

162 intros/outros for you – http://www.retrostatic.com/videos/p803_shownum/15/p803_sectionid/14
Holy shit, thanks man!
I first saw Star Blazers on TV in mid-1980’s. That was the only TV show I ever rushed home after school to watch.
Oh man, this is the English version of Space Battleship Yamato! I actually had no idea … cool!

Ulysses 31- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ4c1X5ene8
Mysterious Cites of Glod – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbVNZ-cghz0
Adventures of the Little Koala – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANG4VzBuoZA

Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1c1G24GWDg
Defenders of the Earth – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Nm_jJBkHtU
The Centurions – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5168yjG3Qw
Ulysses 31, wow.
Love Ulysses 31, problem is now it’s been mentioned I’ll be singing the theme song to myself constantly for the next few days.
Dammit, you beat me to Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors! This defeat shall not be forgotten slag_10!!!
Oh man there are just to many to name. I guess the two earliest I can recall off the top of my head are Captain N: the Game Master and GummiBears.
And for a mixture of 80’s cartoon intros, go here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKmys-Tys90&feature=fvw Although I can only remember like half of what the shows were about.
I remember Captain N! It was just a little before my time, I think … but I’m familiarized myself with it since!
I have an mp3 somewhere of Rockapella, better known for singing “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?” singing the Gummy Bears theme. It is so full of awesome.
Star Blazers was awesome indeed! 3 other high points in cartoon history:
Mysterious Cities of Gold
Spartacus and the Sun Beneath the Sea
Ulysses 31
Don\t forget C.O.P.S fighting crime in a future time!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxQagE62_zI
Thunder… Thunder… THUNDER… THUNDERCATS! HOO!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-sOaUAgbB4
Truly a classic.
Mine would have to be Dinoriders. They were a small series created to promote the toys. It was awesome for a kid like I was that wanted to be a paleontologist.

This … show … what!!
Okay, so it’s 1990. But, I love it just the same. Denver! The Last Dinosaur!

I died, haaaahahaha
It’s only the best show ever! XD
Not being alive in the 80s I can’t really say any but I did like the flash someone made to represent what a Watchmen cartoon in the 80s would look like: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/485797
OMG BIONIC 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I used to watch that. Lets not forget of course ThunderCats. You hear them now, you wonder if they were on shrooms while doing the voice overs.
Have you ever listened to the outtake reel for Thundercats/Silverhawks? Hysterical.
I just remembered another old cartoon while watching this… Beetlejuice was extremely well done, animation-wise.
Aside from Gummi Bears, does anyone else remember the rest of the Disney Afternoon line-up? (Duck Tales, Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Rescue Rangers, Tale Spin, etc.)
Star Blazers: *GREAT* anime! Wish they’d bring it to Cartoon Network…
Thundercats: At least it wasn’t He-Man or, worse, She-Ra…
The Disney Afternoon stuff was all I watched after school during elementary. Darkwing Duck!
The Disney Afternoon line-up basically WAS TV for me growing up…oh Tale Spin, that brings back some memories.
I’m pretty sure neither of these are 80’s, but for cheese cartoon, nothing can be the Mighty Hercules (1960’s) or Samurai Pizza Cats (80s or 90s?).
And C.O.P.S. was pretty awesome.
And of course Captian Planet and the Planeteers!
“I think my favorite part of the Silverhawks intro is when the one guy is in the cockpit of his starfighter, totally wailing on his guitar.”
The Silverhawk you are referring to here is Colonel Bluegrass and the on-board nav system for the Maraj was named Hot Licks.
try a quick search (on youtube for example) for Murs/Z-Trip/Supernatural – Breakfast Club. The videos on youtube are all usermade, so I dunno… close your eyes or something. =)
I was a fan of He Man, Thundercats, and the Disney adventure cartoons. But my absolute favorite as a kid, and still fun to watch now that I’m grown, was hands down “The Real Ghostbusters”
WEll, the franch translation was Albator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMIrFNHAGyE
Their was also Goldorack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M130N3hW83g
Their was also M.a.s.k. :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0BzBFWt8V8

Thank god for the toy industry.
I Don’t know the of the english translation
Check out retrojunk.com!
C.O.W. Boys of Moo Mesa was another show I watched as a kid. Made by the same guy who came up with TMNT actually.
I also remember watching Street Sharks (Jawsome!)
Wow, I totally remember the C.O.W. Boys name, but couldn’t recall the show itself. I think it must have run for very few seasons … ?
oh yeah, and the award for most awesome power rock opening goes to…
Aurthur and the Knights of Justice!
I watched the hell out of this show! That opening was one of my favorites.

Galaxy Rangers – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMpsAmWbSJg
This was another one of those shows I remembered watching as a kid, but couldn’t believe what I was seeing now.
So there’s a group of these rangers. One of them is black. Whenever they’re in the spaceship, everyone’s in the cockpit. Except him.
He’s somewhere in the back with the (robotic) horses. I’m not making this up.
Anyone remember Hong Kong Phooey?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pedDeILvtvE
and get this, here is the Sublime cover of the theme song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoJNdRdGxWs
Oh and heres one from the 70’s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9ExD2DQMes
I never got to see Clutch Cargo (which, by the way, dates from the ’50s), but I did see Space Angel which was made by the same studio using the same gimmick. (Syncro-Vox.)
Hey,anyone remember Hong Kong Phooey?

If you liked Thundercats and Silverhawks, then you might like (snicker, snicker) their unloved third brother Tiger Sharks:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ2IoUST8nY
And who could forget, long before Firefly, cowboys in space with Bravestar:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUxRkgVLSzc
Has someone mentioned MASK yet?:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0BzBFWt8V8&feature=related
And then there’s Visionaries, which were actually pretty cool toys:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmGkwhQrEtg
And who could forget the Mysterious Cities of Gold:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO83HUmy0Rs
Or Spartakus and the Sun under the Sea:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48NaLR8V9fE
And of course, diet Chtullu, Inhumanoids:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki711DX8HDI
Whoa, Tigersharks … haha, do you think they just made a list of cool animals and slowly worked their way down? The worst part is how well it’s animated … it makes me want to see more.
hmmm I posted another comment for Hong Kong Phooey but it did show up *Yay for technology*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pedDeILvtvE
err that should be didn’t…… 1am and I need sleep :). BTW you comic absolutely rocks
*your comic…. meh zzzzzzz
Dang, thank you! So glad you enjoy it!
Okay, something weird’s happening. I’ve tried to post links twice and it hasn’t taken.
Not sure what the story is … ! Are you using HTML?
It’s weird. Now, the original comment I was trying to make is showing, but for sometime after I made it, it just didn’t seem to show on the page, even after others had commented. I don’t know. Weird.
Does anybody remember the show Mighty Max. They used to have the small little toys of it, the boy version of Polly Pocket and also Barn Yard Commandos.
Dude, you are so much my hero for remembering Mighty Max.
Well since this is about Cartoon intros, Can anyone tell me whether the Godzilla Cartoon Series was from the 80s or 90s? I remember watching it when I was 5 in 1994…
This is the intro in case anyone has no clue what I’m talking about
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTItRfN-LO8
80’s defo. I watched it when I was little and I am in my mid-30’s!
Ok, so it’s not a cartoon, but I used to watch this American Gladiators ripoff back in the day too. Sometimes it was more fun than AG!
Knights and Warriors!
I also remember another Gladiator type show where everyone was wearing rollerblades, but I can’t remember what it was called. Anybody remember?
whoops! I found it! Blade Warriors!
http://www.retrojunk.com Has every intro and outro that I can think of. For a few generations.
Space Sentinels – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agK07ZRPfeM
Man, that’s actually … really creepy …
Nobody explicitly mentioned Saber Riders and the Star Sheriffs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXtQTzJKikg&feature=fvst
Nobody seems to remember MASK :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0BzBFWt8V8
Nah… can’t forget Matt Trakker and the MASK team. *nods sagely*
Man, those guys really sang their hearts out in the 80s …
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYs_GCy9PRk
Rubik Cartoon come on i could not be the only one who saw this
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more transparent use of product placement in my life … Transformers was like a 20 minute commercial every day, but at least they tried …
I have one in mind, but I can’t remember the name… It was a city that had been partly destroyed, and the people in the destroyed part had gone mad… I think I was 6 or 7, so please bear with me…
Anyone sees what I’m talking about?
Is this what you mean?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCpMl8UK1SY
Yup, that’s exactly the one I mean… Thanks for the hand!
You’re welcome! Used to watch that myself, way back when. I think it’d make a cool movie nowadays! =)
There’s some for download here
http://www.sfxb.co.uk/other80sstuff/multimedia.html
You have to rename the file (.sfxb to .wmv – yes I know its windows media)
The Silverhawks were my favorite ever. EVER. The guy on his guitar? That was Bluegrass, and I was in LOVE with him.
Here’s one of my favorites if you haven’t seen it already: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H7r2vBuA2I
This isn’t a cartoon (Okay, it was eventually made into a cartoon–a pretty bad one even by 80’s standards) but I think this is my favorite toy commercial (and possibly my favorite commercial period) of all time. SO very 80’s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrhDinWwoyQ
