After seeing so many artists at SDCC, I was really inspired to push myself. I wanted to try something new and be bold.

You guys have to watch the video Hawk posted!

It’s a good highlight reel – Lou Ferrigno’s arms are terrifyingly huge, but you guys gotta watch to the end. There is a special surprise just for you … I watched it a few times and couldn’t stop laughing. XD

We are still recovering (just in time for Connecticon!), but I think it’s fair to say that SDCC was awesome. We got to see Samantha Robertson, our editor, for the first time since we met with her to discuss the possibility of an Applegeeks book, and it was great to see her! The Dark Horse folks treated us really well – we took some of their food and drink and had the opportunity to meet a lot of the people who work there. There is an awesome vibe going on at this company! Hawk and Jess got to join them for dinner on Saturday night and apparently it was a blast!

The setup for the signing was cool as hell – the cover to Volume 2 was backlit in a plastic display behind us as we signed peoples’ books and the free posters that Dark Horse printed up for the occasion. I’d say the most intimidating thing was the fact that our signing was placed between Stan Sakai and Adam Warren, two guys whose respective work wows the hell out of me. Adam Warren’s latest title, Empowered is in my, Hawk and Yuko’s top 5 right now. Stan Sakai does Usagi Yojimbo, which begins to leave the realm of comics and enter the realm of art. It is really good.

Also, thank you guys for showing up to the signing! Deep down we are two geeks who are still a little baffled as to what we’re doing up there, and somewhere in the back of my head I was thinking to myself, “Oh god, no one’s going to show up!” Boy was I wrong – we had a line that went around the corner. You guys really blew us away, so thank you for that.

The meetup on Sunday also went pretty well! We were a little tough to find at first because I’m a dummy (it’ll be easier next time, promise!). Thank you for coming out! I hope we fulfilled whatever expectations you might have had. ;)

We, uh, also got some swag. A lot of swag. Hawk’s pull from this year was pretty epic, and I think he’s putting together a post about it so I won’t tread on that topic too much. Suffice to say, we had to bring back one more unit of luggage than we arrived with. ;) EDIT: Hawk sent me this photo of his haul:

SDCC is also this weird intersection of celebrity and real life, where you get to meet your comics idols and gawk at people you’d otherwise never see. I met Jeff Smith, heard Tad Stone (creator of Darkwing Duck) talk about how his character’s final design came about, and saw several actors from Battlestar Galactica and Heroes wandering around. At one point, John Landis (director of an American Werewolf in London) walked up the aisle, had a conversation with a friend of mine, and called her a dummy. He also bought one of her paintings. The experiences are a little more than I can recall all at once, but it’s totally surreal.

Anyway, I think that’s everything! We saw a lot of familiar faces and hopefully we got to say hi to everyone (Hawk was a little more diligent than I was … put that many comics in one place and my eyes get glassy and I wander in a random direction) – if not, apologies! I meant no slight.

See you next year! (We hope!)

Well I made it home safe. I’m currently unpacking my things from the trip. I want to write up a post about the trip to SDCC, but I want to take pictures of what I got. So give me a couple of day to prepare all that. In the mean time, you can check out the posts from my tumblr site.

Though I can tell you one thing, I went through the convention from one end to the other many times and I came out inspired.
