Today I have to go fulfill my civic duty … jury duty’s a first for me. Hawk had to do this a while ago, and it just sounds like a lot of waiting. Time to take a book! I’ve been reading Perdido Street Station, so I’ll probably get through a lot of that.

I really enjoyed Perdido Street Station, and the same goes for The Scar even though I was a little disappointed at the end.

The waiting can be a little boring but I’m always fascinated by all the stuff that goes on in the courtroom.

/geeky Law and Order joke

My court waiting room also had wireless, consider taking a laptop and maybe some DVD’s as well. It can be a long day for just one book.

I think I ended up watching Blade Runner and playing WoW last time I went.

being a “disabled” person gets me out of having to do that. i’m also a student. i was called upon, but sent in my little form stating the two previous facts.

i’ve sat in on a trial before, some class action suit against a company, for a business law class. it was incredibly boring.

You can liven things up by going to your jury duty dressed as Judge Dredd, being it close to halloween and all.

It varies from court to court, but some allow you to bring PDAs and Laptops, too. But, don’t let me stop you from reading a book, I just thought I’d let you know that you’ve other options, too, while you wait.

I showed up for my jury duty a few years ago, after being told that I was in the group that was selected for Day 1 interviews, but on the day I found out that the guy involved in our case had plead out just that morning.

Good luck.

Perdido Street Station, best book I’ve read in a long time. Iron Council was a little difficult at times but still time and money well spent.

I’ve been called twice, both times my group was dismissed before i left my house. So it ended up being non-payed time off at work for me. AZ cases must not be very important or many, since most of my friends who’ve had jury duty have had similar experiences.

I just realized i spelled “payed” wrong. It should of been “paid”. My bad.

I was on call for federal jury duty, I was called to report twice. Once I had to show, the other time was canceled. The one time I was asked to show I basically spent my morning watching a film on how to be a good juror, answered a handful of questions (truthfully is best, trying to dodge jury duty is usually a bad thing ^_^), and got sent home because of my work history. That’s only a guess, but meh…

I felt that Perdido Street Station was MiĆ©ville’s journeyman work – it’s OK, but his later stuff is better. The Scar is my favourite – Iron Council is rather too political to enjoy unless you agree with his politics, and post-Glasnost people who agree with MiĆ©ville’s politics are thin on the ground.

I hope you get something cool like a high-profile murder trial. You could be on the news telling journalists why you thought the guy was guilty or something and then you can bank your fifteen minutes of fame by writing a book about it. I think that would be cool.

Heh, last time I did Jury Duty the court house did not allow us to bring anything. The few that brought books and laptops had to check them in with security. Only thing allowed in was our wallets and keys. Absolutely insane. Stupid security.

That is one of the best books I’ve ever read! :D You’ll at least pass the time with something good to read.

I’ve been summoned for jury duty five times so far. I think of it my second job even though its like vacation :)

It would be cooler if they allowed laptops.

Bring your laptop and a movie, and maybe the book. After reading Perdido Street Station I felt pretty sure that the author had no idea what his book was about, and it became quite annoying to read very quickly.

I took a stack of Young Justce comics with me and one of the court clerk kept telling me to put them away cause they were distracting the people around me :(
