Wow, that headline is something you’d expect in the NY Post or Daily News. I think such morbid comedy can only be blamed on the LHC. Clearly, our universe is coming to an end.

Ellison Field, is in that area, isn’t it? Haven’t been down to the coast in a year or so, so that might be the wrong name. It’s “Elli-something,” though.

My mum wanted me to evacuate, which is pretty silly considering how far north I am (San Marcos - near Austin). The winds we’re supposed to get are practically nothing [possibly 60mph...I've driven through worse].

All my mum’s family is scrambling. Usually they just relocate to someone else’s house further along the coast, but that kinda doesn’t work this time. My uncle called and said he was in the mandatory evac zone, but that he’d be damned if he was going to leave, and all but one of his boys are staying with him. ^_^ To be honest, most of my relatives said “to Hell with it” and are staying put [but shipping their kids north], aside from a few using it as an excuse to go visit my grandmother.

Ellington Field.

Anyway, I’m up at Texas A&M these days, but my folks are down in League City (77573) and they plan to stick it out, even though they expect the first floor to flood a bit. They’re about 12-15′ above sea level, and the surge is expected to get that high.

We don’t even have the tropical storm wind warning anymore. Which I find amusing because my mum’s under that one and the flash-flooding one. My grandmother’s got the same deal. Which is kinda amusing because my aunts and uncles sent my cousins to them on account of my location “not being safe enough.”

Whoa, that’s a pretty morbid message coming from the local news.

Sensationalism aside, the “Certain Death” quote is taken directly from the National Weather Service Advisory for Ike and they’ve used it before, but it’s been awhile.

Hopefully people get out of their safely, even if it’ll blunt the ghoulish desires of media producers who will be putting their own folk in the way for hopes of getting “the shot.”

Yeah, I was just poking fun at the headline. The quote is definitely from the NWS, and should be taken 100% seriously.

Yeah, the headline is definitely that sensationalist junk that a 3rd grader could have come up with…that’s for sure. Ain’t the modern media lovely?

We live in the world of yellow journalisms bastard child, that’s a definite and sad fact.

I freaked out at the certain death thing, but just saw the flooding in Glaveston before Ike’s even here. Eep. But I am selfish and happy that thsoe of us further south are being spared. Dolly was quite enough.
Any bets that next year all hurricane names will be ones that can be used in catchy headlines? I don’t feel like Ike gave them enough to work with.

All I think about when I hear about Ike is the episode of South Park where he has an affair with his teacher. “Ike made a no-no!”

There has to be a pool among CNN writers for the ‘most sensationalist headline’. I mean, it’s an election year so most readers will hardly notice.
Unless apparently the headline is about a hurricane that might bring certain death, maybe; but it’s uncertain… unless it’s death; which it is.

While making a headline like this is no doubt sensationalist, the original comment about certain death was used for residents of Galveston Island. There’s a chance that Ike might surge the waves up to 22 feet because of its direction and the tides. this would make the area very dangerous. Leave it to the media to quote out of context of course…

You know in London the only thing that brings certain death is Eel Pie.

I suggest hiding under tables! I’m not sure if that works in Hurricanes but it’s what they do on TV right?

Hehe.. not quite. Resorting to that in a flood is like the “duck and cover” with a bomb. ..Not very helpful.

My Hurricane skilz are rusty, we don’t get high winds in London. Mass stabbings, yes but extreme weather, not really (: I am in the know now though, no hiding under tables for me!

yeah, I’ll be in the yard waiting for it to come. Beer is great when waiting for certain death. If I don’t make it, I’ll make sure to have an applegeeks shirt on for when they find me.

Adding to that… I’m still certain (in a imaginary way) that Ike grabbed Link’s boomarang, threw it, and this is the result… a massive hurricane.

77901. When we were still the center of forseen impact, a couple of days ago, that is, I was spazzing with the best of them during work. However, once I got home it was like “Fuck it. It’s another hurricane. I have the flashlights, the water, and my manga. Bring. It. On!”.

Best of wishes to everyone dealing with Ike.

To those of you “sticking it out”… I seriously hope nothing bad happens to you.

BUT… if it does? And you had ample opportunity to get out of dodge? When the smoke clears, please don’t start hurling blame or bitching to heaven about it.

A guy on the news said he was staying put because “God would protect him.” You know what? I don’t think God would. God gave most people sense enough to get out of the way of oncoming danger. Ignore the sense he gave you, you deserve what you get.

And people say God and Darwinism can’t walk hand in hand.

Darn. It went far enough east that now we got absolutely nothing. No rain, no wind…98 feeling like 104 according to TWC.

However, once I got home it was like “Fuck it. It’s another hurricane. I have the flashlights, the water, and my manga. Bring. It. On!”.

Having been in one before while visiting relatives in SugarLand while younger, I must attest to having the same reaction at the time, minus the manga.

I hope everyone made it through ok. It doesn’t look like the flooding got too bad around the inland areas (meaning waist high instead of roof high). And alot of people on the coastline went inward as they got flooded out according to some of the newscasters.

I actually don’t blame people for staying. I’m in Florida, so I’m used to dealing with Hurricanes. I admit I would have stayed, and only really considered going to a shelter if I was in a low-laying (non-beach) area. [Beaches you leave, period.] But that’s just me..
