Depends on where you go. West coast of canada has the closest to american culture, middle canada is mostly country trash, all of canada hates toronto, except for toronto itself, and then eastern canada is full of french people, longshoremen, and newfoundlanders.

Actually Toronto is most like American culture. Arrogant, opinionated, think they are the center of the universe, violent, massive drug and gang problems.

The west coast can only be considered close if you consider hippies to be American culture.

A lingering scent of cigarette smoke and bad cheese, and people that want to think they have culture. Wait. Isn’t that whats there now?

Comment by G.W.

They have very good cheese, unless you consider good cheese to be something that comes in individually wrapped slices, or a can. And they have more culture than you can ever hope to experience.

Oh ya. I hope you know it’s the long weekend here!

Make sure you do the conversion. 18 degrees in Celcius is about 41 Farenheit.

Comment by OtherWeatherman

Actually, more along the lines of 65 degrees farenheit… but yeah, we’re getting in and around mid-20’s celcius… which is 75-85 in farenheit.

Gah! It’s too bad it’s in Toronto or I would so get down there and see you guys! I live in NB and it’s too far to get through…

@Cyberwulf: Actually, BC is “run-down drug-opolis”, Alberta is “country-people”, Saskatchewan is “out-on-the-range”, Manitoba is “through-the-country-and-into-the-city”, Ottawa is “boomin-city”, Quebec, well no one really cares about Quebec in Canada, Newfoundland is “home-of-the-durs”, New Brunswick is “yo-yo-wannabe-gangsta-druggie-yo”, Nova Scotia is “Canadian-England”, Prince Edward Island is “little-paradise-in-the-east” and the upper countries are all cold, ’nuff said.

A few freinds of mine uses this same principle if we hurt each other in combat trainig or on the field.
But it does tend to lead to trouble if your faking an injury.

If you want to try a cultural food then go to a decent pub or restaraunt and order poutine. Fries with gravy and cheese curd… yeah I know. But it aint half bad.
And, of course, GO TO TIM HORTON’S.

Comment by Jennifer
2008-05-17 12:05:03

CHIPS CHEESE AND GRAVY! :D My god, I didn’t think that you could get that outside of Liverpool and the Isle of Man! (GB) It’s genius, you should definately have some. It’s the Isle of Man’s national dish. (Maybe. ¬_¬)

Comment by Rashkavar
2008-05-17 20:23:57

umm…poutine is a Quebequois dish (meaning it was developed by the people in Quebec). If GB has it, they stole it from French Canadians.

Comment by Jennifer
2008-05-18 07:54:57

Um, maybe… but chips cheese and gravy doesn’t really take much development, y’know? I’m willing to bet it was a seperate discovery. ;) I don’t think our version is quite as advanced as poutine… it’s more like something you eat at 3 in the morning after a night out! Yum.

I saw Erin Diaz of Dresden Codac at the Emerald City Comic Con last weekend, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned from him, it’s that Canadians enjoy every bit drawing stereotypes of their fellow countrymen as Americans do. Canadians are generally pretty nice people across the board. Except for Toronto, which is so bad there’s actually a movie about hating Toronto.

Comment by Shadowrider
2008-05-16 18:45:54

Toronto really isn’t that bad. It’s just that a lot of areas are rough neighborhoods.

Comment by Marina
2008-05-19 09:53:09

I’ve been to Toronto several times, and the only rude person I ever met there was an American. From a town not far from where I live, actually.
So maybe the worst thing about Toronto is that us midwesterners can get there too quickly and cheaply?

really?

well Animethon > 15000 people in 3 days
and Otafest isn’t much smaller
They both are great cons. (attend before you make up your mind. )

Comment by Toze
2008-05-20 09:09:18

15,000? Or did you mean 1,500? It’s closer to 5,000 for both cons, though they count attendance differently. Also, @Ferguson; man, I ran Otafest a couple years back. Don’t knock it ’til you’ve attended.

The fallacy in that count is that it counts repeat visitors. Otafest counts ticket sales only.

Your going to Calgary. I live in Calgary so here are some tips.

Your going to be driving everywhere, no matter what. The city is not built for pedestrians.
Go to Banff.
Go to MEC (Just enter MEC in google for address) (do this before you go the banff)
We aren’t country people, we are oil people hence why there is a ridiculous number of high end cars around.
Buy your maple syrup at grocery stores not at the airport. Oh and don’t buy ANYTHING in banff other than like ice cream.
The crime rate is pretty low but avoid Forest lawn after dark.

That’s all I got for important stuff. I’ll try to make it down to visit and buy some of your stuff.

2008-05-17 11:29:30

Fun Fact: Forest Lawn is the name of a really high-end cemetery in California where lots of famous people like Humphrey Bogart are buried. Google it sometime, it’s almost creepy. It’s almost ironic that the name is shared with a Calgary ghetto…
