Last night I decided to do a little experiment, to draw with just a pen. Usually when I draw, I plan everything out with a pencil and small doodles (thumbnails).

As I was drawing, I really wanted to erase but the pen forced me to keep on going.

You’re going commando in the drawing I see. Nice.

You must have one hell of a steady hand, that’s a brilliant job.

Yeah, your lines are pretty clean. When I try to draw with a pen it comes out too sketchy and messy. Well… then again, maybe it’s just the way I draw.
By the way, cool picture.

do you draw with long fluid lines or short lines?

Short lines, usually until I get the basic layout of the drawing then I go in and use long thick lines for finishing the drawing so it stands out from all the sketched lines.
Yeah, I need to practice more.

I’m pretty co-dependent on my eraser, so I have a hard time inking anything. I have this fear of ruining a perfectly good sketch. But that’s what they have scanners for I guess. :)

I too have the fear of ruining a nice sketch, I guess it’s something we have to risk in order to improve.

They do make erasers for pens, however they destroy the grain.

I liked it, Hawk. To a non-artiste, it looks awesome.

Ah, ink is my best friend :) I usually use cheap pens or when I’m feeling REALLY crafty, I pull out my Hitman ….
I do like how this turned out, though :)

Dunno how you do that. Randall Munroe draws better than me.

Nice! Drawing in ink isn’t too hard. Since I do most of my drawing at school, a pen is the first thing I get my hands on, so that’s what I draw with. Which ink pens do you use?

Envy is abound! I dunno about the guy…. countless posts above me.(by countless I mean i’m too lazy to check back and count the number of posts.) I always draw in short lines, which is why I always draw with a pencil. I tried a pen, but it didn’t go over very well -_-. Thats why I only use pens after I make a general outline with pencil. Although I don’t believe this technique is news to anyone, lol.

I like it. It turned out really well, and it’s interesting to see the result of being forced to carry on. In a way, it’s realistic effect- you can’t perfectly control the outcome, and mistakes and imperfections become apart of the image as a whole. It’s practically Zen. ^_~*

Definitely different style than I normally see in pen. Since I cross-hatch myself, pretty obvious that this is very clean.

If I want clean ink, I grab my brush and do ink wash.

Ooh, a drawing with pen! I do that in my school notes all the time. I think in a way it’s good practice while drawing. Since you don’t have an eraser, it makes you extra careful (I’d like to think so) when putting down the lines. X) It looks great.

Nice job, I’m used to drawing without the aid of pencil to guide me, however it’s still natural that it comes out badly, I’ve never used a pencil because I can never seem to find a good pencil/eraser combination that agree with each other.

Awesome work Hawk. I have no feeling when I try drawing with a pen. Oh well. Btw, since you had mentioned trying to find new styles for AG, you should pursue this style! My two cents [which isn’t worth squat with the recession].

Ah, yes… you cannot imagine how hard it is to draw with pen when you only have stuffed, fingerless paws for hands…

what type of paper do you use to draw? I’ve been trying to imitate your style (it’s flattery! I swear!) for a while now, and can’t even come close.
