Simpler times, different characters, different artistic directions, and changing the classic costumes of iconic characters rarely works (Batman is an exception as a hero who has successfully undergone costume re-design). Superman gets external underwear, just like Spiderman gets continuous emo angst and clone sagas. They probalbe cut out a some of the members, like Quick Silver, Hawkeye, and Black Widow. Think about the X-Men movie, Angle and Beast didn't show up untill the thrid movie and they were part of the first team members in the comics. The individual movies introduces each of the characters that will lead into a bigger movie, which will be an avengers movie. Yes, there was a Hulk movie, but it didn't do so well.
