I created this yesterday, came out pretty cool.

fun to play with ^_^
(I will admit to putting my curser sloooooowly into the field and then chasing the orb things, humming the Jaws theme…>_>)
…Hey, so did I :o Hard to catch those little bugger, though =P
I’m glad I’m not the only one. >_>
Very nice! It’s fun to station the cursor in a corner and watch the sprites shoot across the screen.
Awesome :) it would be the coolest screen saver ever
i’ll side you in that one!!! amazing SS
Wish my chem teacher had something like that when we were in school. Reminds me of all the ‘molecules move yadayada’ stuff he use to say.
Also makes me want some Pepsi. Wonder if they still make blue…..
sorry blue was limited edition for the christmas seasons a few years back….i doubt you’ll find any except if you have a friend with a nag for stockpiling exclusive drinks….i so miss the blue……we called it ANTIFREEZE :D
:( I was so sad when Pepsi Blue was discontinued. I am voting for the new Mt. Dew to be blue so at least we can have a reminder.
Neat creation, Hawk! It’s fun to play with.
blue…..mountain dew?? long as its the canadian version im all for it!! (are the canadian and american different still??) where do i vote?
They made blue pepsi? that’s awesome. Better then pepsi ’spice’ I bet.
Yep, the normal Canadian version is caffeine free as there used to be some sort of law that clear/light colored pop couldn’t contain any caffeine. They’ve finally allowed the US version with caffeine into Canada 1-2 years ago and called it (ug, I had to look it up, sorry) Dew Fuel. Stupid me thought it was something like Dew Extreme which is an equally stupid name.
And upon further research the caffeine version is no longer sold in Canada. Eh, I’m not much of pop drinker anymore so didn’t realize….

Really fun to just watch. Don”t suppose you’ed want to turn this into a screen saver? That would be very cool
Yessss, screen saver!
: 0 screen saver would be AWESOME!!! please?
That would really be awesome, but I’d honestly still be happy running after these tricky bubbles, with or without them available as screensavers. Besides, I don’t think that Hawk was expecting this simple project to become such a hit. Even if he’d actually start to think to make a screensaver out of it, it would definitely take some time.
Can I please suggest an idea for the huge what-IF screensaver? It would be cool that the orbs/bubbles move away from were the mouse stands just like in the original project (though visible or not) and that you return to normal mode by pressing the esc button rather than classically moving the mouse/arrow, otherwise the chase-the-orbs with your mouse effect could be lost.
Screensaver or not, the bubbles are still cute. <3
This is somehow relaxing and amusing. Also reminds me of the game Fl0w.
I thought the same thing. Great work, Hawk!
I actually thought it was a joke at first, because I thought it was flow from the little screenshot thingy
thats pretty creative and with the colors, it looks very high tech. something only hawk would do. LOL
it really has that mac feel to it. that simple clean clear look to it.
nicely done =]
Hehehe, I could play with this all day. And for no pointless reason! WOO!
Hrm. Hawk, visually it looks a lot like Jenova Chen’s Flow… which has been around for a couple years.
hm good for him?
that is what it reminded me of right away as well.
So many circles so little time
the circles remind me of embryos… chase the tiny babies!!!
makes me think….. that the mouse is a video game/anime fan going out and trying to make friends with normal people (the dots)
lol
Or maybe the opposite of what you said. Or something completely different. ;)
Hmm… Reflecting about this orb chase makes you wonder upon how just being God seems even more complicated than we may think it is. It definitely doesn’t look to be an easy task. I mean- look at all those bubbles! How can you keep up at looking at every single one of them? Every bubble looks the same, even if they’re different bubbles at the same time. That alone may prove to be confusing. The mouse could represent coincidences, a revolution, a new idea, foreign attitudes and just some of many things that people usually shy away from, especially the thick-headed ones-
Ok, I’m running too deep here. It must be lack of tea.
On a lighter note; bubbles!
A few people are saying this reminds them of the game flow, but I must say this is truly creative and beautiful Hawk. You probably hear this more than you can count but I am more amazed by whatever you make. Many people can make a pretty picture, but some things are just flat out impressively creative. I have seen some things made by ActionScript but I really like this. I mean this is all sincerity that you are my favorite artist.
it would be cool to have a color changer option. But other than that I think it’s the best thing to play with.
That is a great idea.
All the pointer wanted was some friends. Maybe he smells bad.
You created soda dude! Does anyone else see this?
Ohhh dude. Sweet. I now have something to fill my brain-flatulence time.
Turn them all red and it’ll be like chasing mini Targets…
lol i was waiting for someone to say that! it totally reminds me of a target commercial.
Hey Hawk, you should sell this idea to Target.com!
Hehe thats kind of fun and additive.
would be nice if you would now just a few functions for a birth and die system… so its starts with one or three and then it grows to a certian level and the oldes beginn to die :D
electroplankton 2 … coming soon …
A lot of people comment on them running away from the cursor… My cursor is a mermaid. They must really hate mermaids, flying away like that…
It makes me feel kinda sad… Poor Karen…
…. you named your mermaid cursor?
on a better note, why karen?
Because it’s a character that comes from a series about singing Mermaids with bombastic eyes that are larger than their whole face mixed with Spice Girls crack.
…Seriously though, you wouldn’t want to see it. Unless you do not value your brain cells. I countered it by mistake. And here I thought that noting was worse than Tokyo Mew Mew…or Fushugi Ugi. Or whatever.
*shudder*
It’s like I’m the cursor, and the little bubbles are all the girls I’ve ever tried asking out…
awww you deserve a hug!! and a cookie…wanna cookie?
Mmmmmmmmmm…orbs.
Wow, this is so much fun, much more fun than I should ever admit to having. These comments are also very hilarious. (Long live Pepsi Blue!)
If you would like some help with collision detection and response stuff, drop me an email Hawk.
That reminded me a lot of a similar program from the Japanese horror film called Pulse. It’s purpose was actually to demonstrate how living people interact. (Except the dots would destroy eachother if they got too close.)
wow that is cool!!!!!
And Hawk said ‘let there be life’ and there was life. that hated windows.
Cool. It looks like cells under a microscope.
Reminds me of “Flow”
It’s pretty cool.
I like the fact that I can sit my cursor in the center and watch the little bubbles just bounce off. Almost like my movements were unstoppable. I am Invincible!!!!! =D
wow it rely does look very cool i have to say hawk u have rely out done your self with this one i rely like how it all flows with each other.
Great. Your a good artist. Now make with the drawing of the scantly clad feather headdressed las vegas showgirls!
What the fu… I think my sister put something in my tea again.
But i have to say that does look soothing.
Damn! thats awesome :D
Great job!
BUBBLES!!!!!
>.>
<.<
hmmm you have distracted my add brain aga….
oh shiny!!!!
That’s freaking sweet. Very soothing, and apparently *yawns* a good cure for *yawn* insomnia…I’m *yawn* going to bed… *thud*
(In all honesty? It really DID soothe me enough to consider falling asleep…awesome work!)
Every single orb is running away from the mouse as fast as they could. Somehow, they must have inherited the ‘anti-windows’ gene from their creator.
Run little bubbles, there’s a windows pointer nearby..!!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED.
(I’m bored as you can gues so i’m waiting for something to happen. OOH! PRETZEL!)
this box could have been bigger.
This is your only warning. Stop spamming our posts with nonsense posts. If you’re bored, step away from the computer and find something to do. Ananth already warned you once, now I’m warning you. It’s really getting on our freakin nerves. Stop it.
…….sorry?
Realy i am sorry because i have been alot of work and no play so i have little time to chat and not littel time to say anything except whats on my mind. i realy am sorry guys.
…. it’s like falling through the well in Enchanted…
This could keep me entertained for HOURS!!! crap… school!!!
Dude that’s awesome hawk! there’s two things i can make out of the title with the image…
1. life is chaotic
2. nobody wants to play with me!
haha! gotta love Ace Ventura!
It can be done with Quartz Composer.app?
JavaScript or Actionscript?
The colors are Awesome!
Gah! Instead of going directly into my shower I find myself just sitting here, moving my cursor through this field of blue. :p This is no fair you create such easily entertaining and addictive things.
Really cool to play with…I had a lot of fun
It’s really amazing Hawk
Would be really cool if you could make a screen saver out of it, or even an interactive background for the desktop :D
Yes, larger size movie please :-) This would make a very cool screensaver.
Any chance of posting the source?
Hmmm I’m just imagining the nice distraction it would be from work if I had it as an interactive desktop background.
I would be mesmerized every time I tried to do…anything.
It’s like those things you eat in Flow… only I can’t eat them, only chase them around. Fine, toy even more with my mind! =P
Awww I just want them to be my friends but they keep running away! Can’t we all just get along? :D
Also it’s very pretty ;)
very cool!
…anybody else find the secret level?
secret level?
;.; i didn’t expect to, but I actually felt guilty when someone replied…I was just messing with you, the secret level is a lie…
*goes to enjoy his ban*
The cake is a lie…!!
Mmmm…cake.
you know what’d be cool?
if you made the map toroidal (looping edges), the cells would zip around endlessly…
it’d also be cool if you could add in some sort of gravitation effect, so that they’d orbit the mouse.
Hmm… hooked the wiimote up and tried it with the IR pen eh?
Oh wait you have the Wacom!
Someone possibly already said this, but can you make this a widget? I want this on my dashboard… it would help me sleep…
this was so fun :D spent over 3hours playing with this and with some VERY relaxing music on background.
great job as always. you should do somekind of tutorial for making these things
When I first saw the image I thought it was linking to the game “flOw” Awesome game, btw – check it out if you haven’t heard of it.
He may already know about it, but I’m not quite sure about that. And the resemblance found between Flow and the minigame “Life” was already noted by many people above.
Hey can you make a 1600×1200 version? I want to put that as my active desktop at work! :)
Fun to putz around with. The reaction motion feels a bit too computerized, though. Usually, I put in functions with a logrithmic or exponential rise/decay so they move with a more natural feel of “resistance” that people expect. Constant or linear rise/decay of velocity doesn’t usually mesh well with natural feel.
must…have…screensaver version!
is that even possible?
Now, you must implement a web site or application interface in this manner.
Ironic, I know, but I liked this a lot, so I made a screen saver for Windows:
http://www.kyleschouviller.com/xna/alpha-of-screensaver-available/
It was more a way to do some interesting directx graphics programming techniques for me, so it’s not entirely faithful to the original. I think it came out nice though.
Sorry for those not running Windows – I really just don’t have time to do this in another language – maybe someone can get the flash file built into a screen saver sometime.
[...] original inspiration was this piece by Hawk: Life. I saw it and thought, “that would make a nice screen saver, and a good test of some GPU [...]
I liked this a lot, so I made a screen saver for Windows (ironic, I know):

Sorry for those not running Windows – this was just a good way for me to try out some GPU programming techniques, and it was fast for me to do it on Windows. Maybe someone can compile the flash file into a screen saver for other platforms.
Hey Hawk, I saw this on Yahoo news this morning and thought you might like it. To help further your mission in putting a mac in everyone’s home.
http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/hughes/23977/
That was Frackin’ awesome and really fun to play! My hat goes off to you.
*amused*
:)
While its a nice little project and works well, I can’t understand why everyone is so enthralled with it.
Or how its addicting. =/
I must have spent about 30 seconds on the thing before finding something else to do.
*sigh* Probably going to get some flak my way for even speaking out against it. But then again I only come here for the comics which are beautifully written, drawn and coloured, I can’t fault Hawk or Anath in any way there ;D
To be honest, I had a similar reaction. It was interesting for a while, but all it did was make me think, “Huh…neat” before I went back to reading the comic.
