Isn’t it technically a pair of boxers? Others can chime in - I assumed “they” was the proper way to say it, since we’re dealing with a plurality of boxers.
It counts as being plural for this case. Another example of this would be “the boxers ARE signed” instead of “the boxers IS signed”.
