I guess I should have mentioned this earlier, but I’m headed to India for the last two weeks of January. Don’t worry, I’m leaving Hawk scripts … but just a heads up to you guys so you don’t think I died or something! I’ll have plenty of stories and photos to share when I get back, so look forward to it!

For the curious, it’s my cousin’s wedding. My brother bought a Nikon D40, so I’m extra-excited about the photos we’re going to get.

My family is from Rajasthan, so that’s mostly where I’ll be - as to where exactly, I’ve sort of left the itinerary up to my folks. First family trip in a good number of years.

Haha, that’s coincidental. I just came back from India a couple days ago, albeit not for a wedding this time. Weddings are always fun there. Congrats to your cousin. :D

Let me make a small suggestion. If you are using the stock kit lens with that D40, its great for outside daytime shots. But if plan on shooting inside, a nice prime lens will take better shots sans flash. Don’t know if its ok to do lots of flash photography in the weddings, but some people don’t like a lot of flashes. Prime lens are fast enough to get good shots in low light.

HAY SO WHAT’RE YOU GOING TO DO WHEN YOUR FAMILY ASKS WHEN YOU’RE GETTING MARRIED? YOU’RE ALREADY THIRTY-SOMETHING, RIGHT?

ok, a few things. my mom went to india on a business trip. these are real things that my mom has seen, and warned people about
1) ride a camel (then try to steal it and have it spit at people…or is that an alpaka???)
2) WATCH OUT FOR THE MONKEYS!!!!! they are vishus!!! they steel your stuff and bite!
3) traffic is horrible, people drive in the other direction on the highway!!!!!!
4) there are cows wondering on the highway (dunno why) they are holly, so no one hits them

Comment by jessica
2008-01-10 19:39:36

one more thing. kewl fact, they somehow fit an obsene amount of people on vehicles.
(true)ex: 5 people and a dog on a normal motorcycle.

2008-01-11 00:45:29

BAH all of those are exaggerations. Camels are rare; as are theiving monkeys; the traffic is bad but thats because of bad roads and lots of cars, not bad drivers; and cows cross the roads before there can be a problem.

Please, don’t believe messed up rumours about India. Even if your mother has seen them, they’re rarities.

BTW: The Nano rocks. It’s only 1 lakh rupees = 100000 rupees = 2500 USD. All the same, it is one of the most advanced cars on the market… :D

On the news last night they were saying the Nano was introduced in India due to the low car:people ratio. I myself would not drive one, due to the size, i kinda like to have a lot of metal wrapped around me, not the plastics that the Tata Nano has holding it together…

Comment by Ananth
2008-01-11 18:06:06

There’s a lot of things to consider, one of which is that a car like the Tata Nano will work well in parts of India because the traffic is slow and packed. Having a small, maneuverable car is probably a big advantage, and in many parts of India you just don’t get the car up to the kind of speeds you do in Europe and the US. It’s just not necessary … at least, that’s been my experience.

What? They’re alla TRUE! Camels, check. Monkeys, check. Middle class indians in BMWs that can’t drive and should leave it to proper drivers, check. Cows on road, check. Five people and a dog on motorcycle, check!

If you do not see this on a daily basis in India you should get out more … :)

Dude, have fun in India. It’s a blast. We were last there in 2004 and I had a fantastic time hanging out in Mumbai. That place rocks! Dec / Jan are the best times to go as the weather is somewhat nice and bearable - especially up north.
