Dear Nintendo, hire this guy already.
The video shows how he’s using the WiiRemote and sensor bar to do some head tracking for a desktop VR display.
Awesome!

That is pretty sweet. Now I gotta get a wii lol. And happy holidays to you and Ananth
Oh, that is so awesome! I think I know which school to go to, now…Hehehe!
Happy holidays, guys!
Holy…damn im so glad that we got a wii for the house.. MUHAHAHAH!! diffiantly gotta try that > hopefully i dont break nothing…and i totally agree with Hawk. Nintendo needs to hire Johnny Lee.
oh my gosh that is awesome!
that was so incredibly cool
that would make FPS games so much more realistic and awesome! i wouldnt be too happy about having to buy the head tracking system from Nintendo…but it would be so worth it…not to mention it would make the Wii a even MORE revolutionary game system. it would take FPS to a totally new level!
Agreed! That’s just incredible. Let’s hope it makes it to the Wii - or the next gen systems in 5 years or so (sigh) - at the very least.
Yeah, I’m requesting the opposite, nintendo hiring him would probably be the end to his public wiimote usage studies. The whiteboard was probably my favorite.
Don’t worry, they’ll just steal his ideas and give him no credit.
man that is so sweet. That could be the next generation of gaming as we know it (maybe).
im so bad for trying to look around the corner in games using my head. this would be prefect for silly ppl like me =D
Johnny Lee is truly awsome. But….. we will have to leave the chair :
Damn that’s sweet. I’d love a stealth game set up with head-tracking.
I think I’ll get my stepdad to help rig up something like this.
Dear god that’s sexy. I hope homebrew games start picking up on stuff like this.
So beautiful…I really hope Nintendo picks this up.
Wow something like probably would make the Wii actually a bit revolutionary. But until then no, its still a piece of crap
Damn… 0_o
OMG they haven’t hired him yet. if i were a nintendo VIP id be n a jet in an hour on the way to his house.
He also made a sweet video of using a Wiimote to turn any laptop into a Tablet Monitor, or any wall, tabletop, or surface into a digital drawing board to show up on screen (ie SUPER Tablet:p)
I really wanna try it when i get my Wii back from my brother (i let him borrow mine so im wiimote-less to try this awesome stuff.)
Yes… please… Gimme games! :D
Awsome stuff, great ideas.. Just hire this guy already!
OMG! If Nintendo picks this up, it would drastically change the 1st person genres forever. More than likely someone from Nintendo has already seen it but coming from a consumer, this is just sheer brilliance and alot of thought came out of it. Love it.
now imagine what this would look like on a projector screen on a wall… -drools-
wow i can see the countless methods of peopel hurting themselfes while playing with headtracking…*spaces out*
trackIR from Naturalpoint already does this better, all they need is higher volume sales through more game support from developers. That would bring the price point down far enough that not just us flying/racing sim junkies would get them. The only FPS that really supports this is Armed Assault.
That was pretty trippy. Who would have thought that something like that was even possible.
thats nuckin futs! I am glad I own a wii and hope nintendo does something good with this
Boing thwack is right, Natural Point’s TrackIR has been doing this for years and has become totally indispensable in flight simulators. Although it is great to see someone adapt Nintendo’s tech to act in the same manner and in conjunction with a second IR device I wouldn’t call it to much of an original thought.
Still, major props to the guy for showing how it could be easily adapted to make the Wii experience that much better.
Also if he added one more IR dot (or switched to a stationary light source paired with reflective IR tape like TrackIR) he could go from 3 DegreesOfFreedom to 6 DOF. With 2 points you can only track the X, Y and Z planes but not Pitch, Roll and Yaw axises.
I wonder, especially given Kerjack’s comment….
Why not just mount the wiimote on your head, considering that not only does it have the positional sensing from the IR, but *tilt* and motion sensing as well?
And for the commenters mentioning the TrackIR–how much does the TrackIR cost again, compared to buying just a Wiimote?
Well, $80 - $199 if I recall. But lets see you would need a wiimote + blue tooth adapter + (unless you are going to cart your wii around) a IR light source. Oh and normally you need to pay for the software to make it all work. Which he is either a nice guy and is giving it away or he can’t sell it because of patent infringements, both very possible. Not to mention the software is sort of incomplete.
But thats just for it to work with the PC. I agree using a wiimote plus an additional IR bar makes a lot more sense for use with the Wii if the software would ever support it. But again that could be because of patent/licensing issues.
Either way, TrackIR is a great product and has been around for awhile so it deserved mention. Oh and BTW the Wiimote lacks the proper sensors to track the Yaw axis.
