For groups like NIN and Radiohead, it would mean more long-haul income and less pressure to have every new album outsell the last; for the record company, more incentive to expand the ways the music is available since they are not looking for an immediate return on a huge investment. It may also encourage a broadening of artists because of a de-empphasis on blockbuster hits. Basically I believe Reznor once said that his Studio work was intended to be very different to live performance, and feels a whole group reinterpreting his work to be one of the best ways to get that across.
