Comic is finally up. I really like how this one came out.

That happened to me once. We were totally cool after we broke up and I didn’t have to hear her whine about how I was cruel because I like consuming the flesh of previously moo-ing things. I mean, it’s all well and good, do what you do, believe what you believe, but the second you tell me I can’t devour baby sheep is the second I stop caring what you think.
On a side note, this is totally the type of date I’d take a girl to.
Did she tell Hawk about her eating habits before? i don’t remember it. I consider it just as rude to expect some one to read your mind about your ethical decisions as it is to disrespect said decisions. So in other words, i consider them even :)
Props on the colours Hawk! Best I’ve seen yet.
besides religion purposes why would you want to be vegetarian? its stupid i think, i like lamb chops best!
It’s not stupid, at least no more so than any religion out there, or sports team fanaticism, or video game fanaticism or anything of the sort. It’s just a preference based upon an ideal that you hold yourself to.
It’s all fine and dandy, 100% don’t get me wrong. If all you want to do is eat greens then be my guest. I wanted to cook for a long time and even considered specializing in vegetarian foods back when it was the in thing. I just don’t want it spouted at me as if I was evil.
Now don’t get me wrong, this comic didn’t address it like that at all. Hawk never asked Josie about it, she never brought it up, I’m sure it was assumed from Josie’s end that it wasn’t a big deal so long as she didn’t go preaching her ways. Like any less than mainstream lifestyle (seemed to be the least offensive way I could put that) I assume it’s easy to get into the habit of realizing that not everyone is like you, and also that you wont be able to convert them to your ways, so just trying would do little more than piss the others off.
Hawk, on the other hand, was borderline rude in a seemingly obvious desire to make a joke. I don’t think it’s necessarily an “awkward” moment in the real world, but the word and thus comic accurately describe my feelings after the fact, certainly.
Also: I’d like to point out that there are diseases out there that make the processing of meat and meat-like products difficult. I’ve known a couple guys who have to take protein pills because they can’t eat meats. Whether true in the comic or not, it’s entirely possible that Josie didn’t have a choice. Course if that were the case I know I’d have told Hawk that in the first place, buuuut like any young relationship there are always those moments where you wish you’d known a little more about the person you’re with. Get a great sense of the awkwardness of Hawk when it comes to the dating world, and I can relate. So kudos Ananth, that’s some good story writing. I’d also like to mention, since I don’t post here often, that I like the way the eyes have changed, Hawk. I love it when artists change styles around, even a little bit. You and McConville never cease to amaze me in that respect.
I loved how the camera angles and size variations augmented the story.
Hawk is looking at both the menu and Josie in the center pane, and we (the reader) are seeing precisely what he sees. There is a bit of subtlety in how the menu is absorbing Hawk’s attention, and how it dominates the reader’s view, as well.
Then when the punch line comes, Josie is absent in the pane! This is pure genius (or common sense, if you’d like) because Hawk is ignoring her, as well. It just wouldn’t have had the same impact if she was there.
Finally, when Hawk realizes what is happening, the scene is extremely simple and non-distracting, focusing on Hawk and Josie and the distance between them, which, coincidentally, had not been clearly depicted until that point.
Really good strip.
“Awkward.” lol
Great one :) Also - there are a number of veggies out there that just don’t eat red meat but are fine with variations of chicken. So that would make Hawk’s choice quite good without reading her mind. I think she’s cool enough to get over it… after all - how bad can it get after peeing on her stage ?
…obviously those people have no idea how you kill a chicken.
not every vegetarian is about ‘killing a creature’ some just dislike the taste.
awkward is right……only a salad at a restaurant! I bet the cook will be surprised too.
Like the comic, its great to see Hawk out in style. One thing bothered me, though. From the menu items, it sounds like they’re at an Indian restaurant. Now, every Indian restaurant I’ve ever been to has had an extensive vegetarian section, which is both yummy and caters to the portion of Hindus that don’t eat meat out of fear that it might be a former relative. It doesn’t really detract from the comic, though.
It was a bit awkward back when my wife and I first met when I found out she was a vegetarian. All I had was pepperoni and sausage pizza, and she was like “um, I’m a vegetarian.” Totally floored me. But she’s one of those cool vegetarians that doesn’t care what anyone else eats, so long as she gets her greens. I’ve become semi-vegetarian, because if I want to eat, I have to eat what she cooks, but when we go out to eat, I get my fill of tasty animal flesh. :)
Anyways, great way to capture that awkward moment. Keep up the excellent work, guys!
um..most indian restaurants where i live do have vegetarian food…very tasty too. but then i live in malaysia.
They do out here to. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a restaurant anywhere that didn’t at least offer salads. Indian places espeically are big on veggie stuff. Good veggie stuff that that.
Like the coloring in the last panel on hawk…
Also, congrats on the applegeeks tablecloths, the 2nd one (group photo) is selling for like $160+ with 6 days left…
…wonder how much it would sell for if you colored it. =D
oops, edit: “Like the coloring in the 2nd to the last panel on hawk” =p
I find it funny how both you and Ctrl-alt-del are doing Vegan date jokes at the same time. This isn’t leading into another crossover is it? (>^_^)>
