I have the D50 and have been very pleased with it. My bud got me into Nikons after he got is D80, and since I got my D50 I haven't looked back. I've found that keeping my eye out at rummage sales/craigslist yields a decent number of Nikon lenses that still work great on the D series cameras even if they are older (how I got my macro and long tele lens). The D40 is a great camera. I have the D50 and have been very pleased with it. My bud got me into Nikons after he got is D80, and since I got my D50 I haven’t looked back.

Not too many of them out, but it's still possible to find one, or a D70S. Still, there's no harm in keeping a D40 - I used my FM2 for almost 20 years.
